Why do you guys think it's harder to get into schools as a transfer student? I can't figure it out, can you?

Many schools will only accept transfers into the college on a space available basis... sometimes this is the department policy... sometimes it is the university itself that has this policy. So basically, a transfer student is "in competition" with only other transfer students for spots that open up in that class. Not all schools work this way, but for the ones that do it can make transfering very difficult.

I agree with Broadway Belle. In fact, I feel pretty passionately that transfers are treated unfairly. They seem to be viewed/treated as pariahs by most of the MT/BFA schools... and I have not been able to figure out why. There are some schools (Emerson) that flatly state that they will "not even consider" transfers for their BFA program. I suppose they should get credit for their honesty! Perhaps the treatment given to transfer applicants is the schools' way of discouraging students from trying to move from one BFA program to another? But this treatment applies even if the transfer student was not in any type of a theatre program...so there has to be some other reason...

Many, if not most, of the BFA/conservatory program schools require that a transfer (aka: "any student who has ever enrolled in any college") start as a freshman and attend the school for 4 full years, despite having been considered as an "afterthought" in the admission process. The "freshman status" rule makes sense to me, because many schools treat a class as a theatre troupe, and they want all students to have the full experience of the program. But if a student is going to enter a school as a freshman, why can't he or she apply as one? Seems to me that a BFA program should welcome the additional experience and commitment shown by a student who is willing to start all over again just so he or she can be part of their ensemble!

Bottom line. I applaud all of the kids who are trying to transfer...First of all, almost every single one of them has demonstrated that he or she can make the transition from High School to college succesfully (you have to earn very good grades in college courses to be considered a viable transfer candidate...and remember, college grades are a better indicator of future college success than the SAT or the ACT or any high school transcript!). Also, transfers have the fortitude to try (sometimes for the second time) to get into a school where they can pursue their theatre interest, even though they already went through the college application and acceptance process once. And they have the wisdom to admit that they made a mistake on their previous college choice. Schools don't appear to realize that most transfers do not have the constant coaching and administrative support from parents, teachers, acting coaches, voice coaches, audition coaches, etc. in the application/audition process that so many MT HS seniors do...they are often doing the entire process, from application to audition, on their own..while they are adapting to their first year in college...and that shows maturity and independence. Finally, most transfers (and their tuition payers) have to be very committed ...because most BFA students who are successful in transferring are going to attend (and pay for) at least 5 years of higher education to complete their degree.
Gee..was I ranting?

vicarious I completely agree with you. It doesn't make sense to me either. I spent last year at a school that I didn't like persuing opera and felt completely empty. I realized that without MT my life wasn't whole. I know that sounds cheesy, to then decide to go through auditions and do everything over and I'm very willing to go another four years. It seems like they would want transfers more than people right out of HS because they have experienced more and have more of an idea of what they want to do with their lives.

Thanks for your post. I loved it! :)

Just curious if any of you auditioned for OU. There was a student at my daughter's audition that had transferred in, I believe in the spring of his sophomore year. So I think he kind of transferred in as a second semester freshman into the MT program. They said that actually worked well with their program since the bulk of the MT training didn't start until the spring anyway.

are we supposed to hear from syracuse soon too?

i thought transfers heard the same time...at least i hope so...i think so!

i have to agree completely with vicarious's ranting post. we transfers have had to work harder and be independent while trying to acclamate ourselves to our first year in college and it has been tough and emotionally draining and life-fulfilling. i don't know of a single senior friend of mine who will appreciate college acceptance letters or BFA programs nearly as much as i will after this arduous and life changing experience.

My son and I met a transfer student on one of our audition trips. She was staying at the hotel alone, navigating her way through the audition without parental help, while also managing her college life. I was very impressed with her maturity and independence, to say nothing of her passion!!! Wishing all the transfers great news in the coming weeks......hoping your hard work will pay off and bring you closer to your dreams! :)

Another rejection came today. Hope everyone is receiving good news! :)

Rejected from RSAMD.

um. i'm getting really stressed out about syracuse.

more good news to alleviate the pain of waiting and rejections: i got admitted to univeristy of the arts!

for those of you dealing with waiting and rejections (like me...), might i suggest a life-sucking part time job? it seriously passes the time with the added bonus of saving money to pay for our transfer. i have been serving at a restuarant/bar to get experience incase i ever need a job of that nature in nyc. just a thought...

that's great news! now you will have a choice to make betwen at least two great places. Congrats and good work! And hang in there with the job...next year that $ will come in handy, I'm sure!

does anybody transfer to CCM? it seems an awfully hard thing to do.

and i notice on their website it doesn't say exactly how many credits, or what courses in what disciplines you need to transfer... so you can just transfer on a whim with five completed units, or what? haha

Got into point park today.
