Hello, I'm trying to make a decision right now whether I should stay in CA and try to get into a 4 year university in CA or if I should go back home to Virginia and go to Community College for 2 years and try to transfer/apply to get into a UC from VA. I have lived and worked in Los Angeles, CA for the past 2 years. I recently enrolled in several CC's in the LA area and was told by counselor's I wasn't going to be able to get any of the classes I needed. All of them fill up before I got a chance to enroll in them. I figured I would have an easier time getting classes in a Virginia CC.

Would Transferring from a CC in VA to a UC even be possible? I would like to just apply right now for a UC but I graduated from a highschool in CA in '07 with a 2.7 GPA and a similarly average SAT score so I don't think I would be able to even get in.

As far as the other route of applying to a UC in CA right now if it means anything I have worked in a similar field to what I wish to study for the past 4 years, electrical engineering, so it's not like I got out of high school and have been doing nothing since. I have also graduated from 2 technical schools since as well. Would this be enough to make up for my GPA and SAT score from '07 to get into a UC?

I have money saved up and family financial support to help for school but I have recently lost my job and don't want to linger in CA out of work and not in school.

I would appreciate any helpful information, thank you.

As I said in the other thread, 90 percent of UC transfers are California community college students. You might have an easier time getting classes at a Virginia CC, but you’ll have an infinitely more difficult time getting into a UC campus.

If you’re trying to stay in Cali for university, just stick around … articulation agreements are largely in part why 90% of students come from a community college.

Since you’re out of a job have you reconsidered relocating within california? (There are over 100 cc’s in cali so where you move next should definitely have a school close by)

UC’s necessarily don’t care about your high school grades anymore and they focus more on what you’ve been doing out of high school. (Community College + work / extra cirriculars)

My advice would be stick around in Cali if you wish to stay and make the best of it … try moving/relocating to another school. I’m not sure if any of your credits from the technical schools will transfer over but thats something your CC counselors should see if the matriculate over or not.

The UC system is a really great one and I suggest you stick it through!

If you move it will be close to impossible to transfer into a UC, at least in comparison to staying. And yes, UCs do not care about HS at all if you are a cc transfer.

I also think it would be a good option to move. I moved for similar reasons to a diff. part of California. Even with rent, it is cheaper to attend a cc for 2 years than a University. Also, you would get great life experience and a chance to network.

In my opinion if you want to go to a UC, do not move.
