Transfer To UC From Out Of State Community College

Hello, I'm trying to make a decision right now whether I should stay in CA and try to get into a 4 year university in CA or if I should go back home to Virginia and go to Community College for 2 years and try to transfer/apply to get into a UC from VA. I have lived and worked in Los Angeles, CA for the past 2 years. I recently enrolled in several CC's in the LA area and was told by counselor's I wasn't going to be able to get any of the classes I needed. All of them fill up before I got a chance to enroll in them. I figured I would have an easier time getting classes in a Virginia CC.

Would Transferring from a CC in VA to a UC even be possible? I would like to just apply right now for a UC but I graduated from a highschool in CA in '07 with a 2.7 GPA and a similarly average SAT score so I don't think I would be able to even get in.

As far as the other route of applying to a UC in CA right now if it means anything I have worked in a similar field to what I wish to study for the past 4 years, electrical engineering, so it's not like I got out of high school and have been doing nothing since. I have also graduated from 2 technical schools since as well. Would this be enough to make up for my GPA and SAT score from '07 to get into a UC?

I have money saved up and family financial support to help for school but I have recently lost my job and don't want to linger in CA out of work and not in school.

I would appreciate any helpful information, thank you.

Transferring from a non-California community college to a UC is extraordinarily difficult. California community college students have first priority for UC transfer slots, as part of the state Master Plan for Higher Education. 90 percent of UC transfer students are from California CCs.

If you want to transfer from CC to UC, you need to stay in California.

Thank you for the quick reply. Care to comment on the difficulty of getting classes in a CC here in CA? Did I just apply too late or is it always like this.

Also think there is any chance of just getting into a 4 year university right away?

Stay in California, DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR INSTATE TUITION AND FINANCIAL AID.

Plan out your classes carefully and do what you can. Prioritize classes which must be taken in succession. This means math and science in particular. Take English as early as possible as well. Your plan should be to knock out your major prereqs and general education. Check http://assist.org for details.

Highschool GPA and non-transferable GPA doesn’t really matter and there they don’t look at SAT/ACT scores at all, there isn’t even a place to input them.
