Transfer to DePaul With a Poor Early GPA but a Strong Finish

I’m intending to transfer to DePaul University. I’m currently 24 years old. I initially attended community college out of high school because that’s what my parents wanted. Things did not go well and there are about 6 semesters worth of F’s and W’s on my transcript. Recently I decided I wanted to take school seriously and have been earning straight A’s. The community college currently calculates my GPA as a 3.2 but by the time I’m ready to transfer I’m anticipating it being a 3.6.

Will DePaul look at recent grades more heavily than past performance? It seems that DePaul has a solid adult admissions program that I would fall into. However, I am looking to complete a traditional degree in finance.

Also I a have been heavily involved in a major philanthropic organization that holds chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada as well as some Greece. Through that organization I have earned the Chapter President of the Year award for my work as president of the chapter in Phoenix Arizona. From there I was elected to the 7 person national board that runs the whole organization. I was placed as the fundraising chairman and under my supervision we were able to raise and donate $60,000 for the rebuilding of a church that was destroyed on 9/11.

Will this experience help boost my chances?

Most of my cousins and my sister have graduated from Northwestern University and are highly successful and well connected in Chicago. With careers ranging from doctors to judges and one hedge fund manager.

Can my family success and connections play a role in admissions?

I hope this helps.
I attended Loyola University, but ended up failing out after the second semester in my third year. I attended community college and brought my cumulative gpa up to exactly a 2.0. Then I went to DePaul’s 1 day admission event and was accepted. I ended up graduating from DePaul within a year cramming in all mathematics courses, ended up with a 3.83 gpa from DePaul with a math degree and ended up getting a job as an actuary after graduating. If you put in work and know that these bad grades don’t define you then you can still be successful and DePaul helped me a lot by giving me a second chance and the professors and resources available at DePaul are excellent. You just need a cumulative gpa of a 2.0 to transfer into most of DePaul’s colleges. Family success will play no part in admissions.
