Tutor for a high school student: This student, named Jinho Kim, has autism and was struggling in school. Coming from South Korea to the United States at 13 years old, he knew little English as well. I tutored him every week to help him in mathematics, English, and his communication skills. I still tutor him during the school vacations and whenever I am back in Modesto
I also tutored an international student, Named So-Hyeon Kim, from my local church in Modesto. She was a fourth-grader from South Korea who wanted to study in the US. So, I frequently taught her how to write, speak, and read English. Although she went back to Korea, she still comes to the US to learn more, and I always am there to help.

Reason for transfer: I actually was applying to Duke during my Senior year in high school, but because my parents did not want me to travel far and because I had a brother in USC already, they thought it would be best if I mature more before I leave to another university far away. No doubt, I definitely feel like I have changed since graduating from high school. USC has provided me with the conviction and dedication needed to pursue an academic career. But, coming from a small, rural town myself, I felt uncomfortable being in such a large crowd of people in LA, even at some of the elementary schools that I wanted to teach at. I am grateful for the diversity of students in Los Angeles and it would be an even bigger bonus if I can teach in this amazingly diverse community. However, I want to explore a new environment and be part of a smaller, yet still diverse community (USC was much more crowded than I would have liked). Also, some of the students that I tutored are going to live near Durham, NC, and I have really gotten close to some of them. There are elementary schools very close to Duke where I think would give me great opportunities, not only to teach my former students, but also to teach in a smaller community where I can feel more comfortable. And at a school as well-rounded and diverse as Duke, I can learn from so many different people and learn to teach a wide range of people.
