I am a first semester freshmen at an in state public university. I did not like this university since i was in high school, and had no desire to attend and had my heart set on another public university. (Ohio University) Last minute after receiving a full tuition scholarship, I decided to attend the school I did not like. I am currently a student here and still dislike it, they don’t have the program for my major (health administration),
my classes are too easy and I have over 100% in three of them, and I feel that people here are very unwelcoming, cliquey, and more stuck up than the other university. I am having trouble making friends and overall hate my experience. Thinking about being here for three more years makes me feel uneasy andI have no motivation to be social or join
clubs since I do not like the university in general. I pay for my own education and my parents are unable to help me, so thinking about transferring is hard. Should I transfer to another university and get a private loan to be happy or just stay and finish my degree with less debt?? Really looking for guidance and opinions. I currently have a 4.0 at my state school and had a 4.18 in high school. also, I am a minority student and first generation. Thank u!
Your parents will have to cosign for any loans over about $6000/year. Are they credit worthy?
I’d stay with the money. It is very unlikely you’ll be able to borrow enough to be full pay at another school.
But don’t stay and be miserable. Do things to enjoy the school. Get a job, find out about programs to make your career plans work (business classes), find groups that interest you.
Ohio University offers transfer scholarships, work on getting transferable credits done and apply for these scholarships. It’s great you have a high gpa, you will need it to land these scholarships. Create an action plan to get yourself to OU without blowing opportunities to afford to go.

This is a difficult decision. Since you are paying your own tuition I would stay where you are. The amount of money you are saving is a gift! If you could graduate with a 4 year degree and be debt free you are so ahead of the game. If there is a way you can transfer to OU without incurring additional debt then go for it!
I know you are not happy where you are but do you think it may be because your preconceived ideas are possibly clouding your objectivity? Sometimes we see only what we want to see when we aren’t happy with a situation. I am not saying this is you at all but I would hate to see you give up a full ride without some serious soul searching. Weigh all your options, do your OU scholarship/transfer research and then make an educated decision as to what to do.
Keep up the great grades! I’m sure you will come to the right decision for you.
Are you an Ohio resident?
Ohio transfer scholarships won’t come close to full tuition. Stay where you are and make the best of things. You might find that with more time you’ll enjoy the experience. Pursue higher level classes, extra credits, study abroad, clubs, internships, research, etc.
yes i am!
You need to try to find a major that challenges and engages your interest at the school you are attending. Have you talked to academic advising? Asked a professor in the most interesting class you have for extra work? Try to find more challenging classes for next term. If there’s an honors program and you’re not in it, apply for that now.
I wouldn’t assume the students there are unwelcoming if you aren’t willing to be social and join clubs and are generally giving people the impression that you feel the place is beneath you.
You can’t apply to transfer for next year until spring, and you may or may not be able to afford to go if accepted, so don’t neglect learning how to get the most out of where you are.
