Transfer to ucb

Can some one give me an opinion, even though we all know this forum is arbitrary and not at all comparable with actual acceptance or rejection dicissions made by UCB. LOL. I have applied for transfer for fall 2010 in comparative lit. my gpa is not so hot (3.68)but I have lived and travelled abroad for most of the past 5 years, working on major hollywood motion pictures. I speak read and write Arabic (picking it up abroad) most of my EC's are related to filming (with leonardo dicaprio recently) and studying arabic on my own time outside of cc's and in-country. In my essays I highlighted my interest in comparative lit by talking about plato's influence on Arabic lit and Philosophy and I how I discovered this through the poetry of Jili while living in morocco. I also made some pluggs for having worked so closely with many movie stars as a PA and interpreter. My GPA is not the best, but i was involved in honors all through out my year at the oos, and came down to the peralta cc's just to be closer to ucb and take more easily transferrable credits.

all this is outlined in my app.
You think i have a chance? or is my app too spotty?

ps. anyone else who is applying as transfer please feel free to post your own stats

not so hot eh?

i have a 3.60. stop complaining  haha

I think you have a decent chance–i heard the weight personal statements the most of any UC, so really concentrate on those!! (my biggest downfall right now)

good luck!

ps i’m applying for spanish…

btw–if the major you chose is in the “Arts and sciences” and not “social sciences” category, you have a really good chance of getting in. not a shoe in, but decent chances (so i have heard!)

Comparative Lit for UCB has a 41.8% admit rate (roughly) according to UC statfinder. Judging by your involvement in movies/filmmaking, speaking Arabic, traveling and everything else, I would say you have a great chance.

The average GPA for comparative Lit for transfers admitted to UCB for 2008 was a 3.68, which is literally right where you are.

In conclusion, GPA = good enough
General admit rate = 42% = pretty good.

EC’s, work/life experience = above average
Essays = Need to be solid to pad app, but shouldn’t be a major factor.

btw these stats are for All applicants, not just CCC transfers. If you’re a CC transfer, you’ll have an even better shot.

The average applicant for Comp. Lit. had a 3.43. Considering that 291/697 were accepted, yielding about a 42% acceptance rate, and considering that it’s safe to say half of the applicants had a 3.43 GPA or below, meaning 348.5 lol had below a 3.43, that would mean that you’re in the top 14.3% of applicants, and are the prototype accepted student (in my opinion) by GPA and EC’s for UCB. You have a great shot, I would say 75-80% in, and maybe even better.

So now I’m wondering about my chances for Fall 2010.

I’m applying as a Psych major for UCLA, but as a Phil major for UCB…let me tell you these personal statements are giving me hell trying to balance both majors.

So for UCB philosophy though:

UC GPA: 3.57 at end of Fall.
IGETC done at end of Fall.
excellent upward trend 5 semesters. 1.0 -> 3.3 -> 3.3 -> 3.7 -> 4.0 (in 18 units this sem).
essays will be decent to above average I think.
prereqs done (none articulate at my CC lol).
150 volunteer hours done at an elderly assisted living center and with tutoring kids over the past 3 months.

Please let me know my chances. Thanks all :).

should be a lock. Great upward trend. And guess what, Berkeley loves upward trends like models love coke.

^ False, I happen to know they prefer Pepsi.

this forum is hilarious. i love it!

forgot to mention that i have two fully dropped terms because of unpredictable shooting schedule. this is all explained on the app but those w’s sure look baaaaaaaaaaaad to me. lol. thanks for the encouragment you guys. i submitted my app three days ago and am not sure how i will make it through to notification time with out exploding from nerves!

fall & spring 2008/09 = 49 units; GPA of 3.2

fall 2009 at California cc = 15 units at 4.0 GPA (most probably…semester’s not over but I got it in the bag)

ps I’m applying for Middle East Studies major and fall-spring 08 were actually completed at a university in the Middle East. Mentioning in statement that GPA reflects my initial struggles in getting acquainted with a more rigorous educational system. Personal statement is rock solid (though I garner it’s more for fringe applicants than toss-ups).

Any chance for Fall 2010?

what do you do in hollywood? j/c haha

who me? i started as an actress in some moroccan films./.learned arabic (or at least the moroccan dialect) and became an onset interpreter for moroccan production comapnies who partner with foreign production companies for on location shoots. it was a fun job and i miss it…but ucb/ucla is my big project now!!!

Jeremy, we seem to be on here about the same amount…hows it going for you?

Sarah, I feel like my nerves will likely explode too from the strenuous wait for our decisions. Either way, from what people have been saying to us, it seems like we both have a pretty good shot for UCB! Let’s definitely hope for the best.

I’ll be sending you my Personal Statements tonight btw if you’re still interested in reading each other’s.
