transfer with great HS greades but poor 1st college semester.

Hi, My son who attends in state college has great high school grades / sat etc. but he lost it there in 1st semester and has all Cs,Bs and 1 A , however he got serious and is working hard again so probably will get good grades again in next semester . what's better for him transfer wise - this fall [most deadlines ahve passed ] spring or next fall ?
Thanks in advance.

maybe your son will have a better chance if he proves himself in the current semester, owns strong recs, and apply for transfer in the following year. Since I kinda think it is not possible for college profs offer wonderful recs to a student without an academic good performance even though he wants to help you.
BTW, I’m now applying for transfer myself so I’m not quite professional on it. Anyway, hope your son good luck.

Sounds like he might be better off getting another semester under his belt, to improve his GPA. But part of the equation is the type of school that he is trying to transfer to - the higher tier, the better grades he’ll need.

Also, for my state’s publics, you can apply as a transfer for the fall until late May/early June.
