Transfer...

Hi. I am currently at the U of M, College Park. I have found this school to be too big for me and I've really had trouble feeling like I "fit in", even though I'm a part of several organizations and I've been here for a year. For those at Elon, I have some questions...

How are the academic standards? Do you find the classes challenging? Do you feel like you are really "getting something" out of your major?

Are the profs accessible? How big in general are the classes? Is it easy to participate in classes?

How about student life? What kinds of things do you do, typically? Do a lot of students drink? Do drugs? If so, does it bother you if you choose not to? Is drug use noticeable? Are students generally studious? Friendly? Open-minded? What do they want to do after college? Is greek life really big? Is it necessary to join greek life to feel a part of campus?

If you can answer any of the questions, that would be great. Thanks!

My son is considering Elon as a transfer also and would like to hear from current students. I can say that I had a son graduate from Elon in 2004. He loved the school, profs were very accessible, classes small (usually in the 20's), lots of classroom discussion/projects. He did not join a frat, but had many friends in frats and it never seemed to be a problem. He said he saw alot less drugs during his time at Elon than he saw in our local high school. He was a business major/ history minor. I'd like to hear from any students in science majors. Hope some of that helps gdrusche, even though it is somewhat dated.

My D is at Elon and her classes range from 3 to 18 students. Lots of interaction with professors. I don't think they use TA's, at least she has never had one. The professors are visible on campus and even eat in the dining halls with their students. The science department is awesome- I am sure you will hear about the undergraduate cadaver lab. My D did join a sorority and is a lot happier since she did that- but has lots of friends who didn't and everyone gets along.

I just transferred to Elon, so let me see if I can help...

My classes this semester seem pretty easy. I'm taking a class for each of my majors, a lit class, a spanish class, and a required health class, and the work load is managable. I really do feel like I'm getting something out of my psych class especially (I'm a psych/int'l relations double major).

My profs keep great office hours, and are quick to respond to emails and voice mails! My smallest class is probably 14 kids, and the biggest is 25, so they're really close knit. Participation is required in all of my classes, and usually I hate talking in class, but here, I like participating!

I might catch some grief on here, but I'm a big partier-I go to the bars on the week, and party on the weekend. A lot of students drink here, but a lot of kids also don't drink, and you can find people doing whatever you like. It's not like if you don't drink, you sit alone all weekend watching TBS. There's a LOT to do that doesn't involve drinking. Drug use isn't as big, and I haven't seen a ton of it on campus since I got here. Most kids I see study all week long in the library, and then party hard on the weekend. Greek life is pretty big, but like I said, there are plenty of kids that aren't involved and it's not really a big deal.
