Hi, I'm going to be attending UC Berkeley this Fall, but I've grown up in the Bay Area all of my life. Now I did apply to Pomona, but didn't get accepted. However, is it possible to transfer from Cal to Pomona after one year, and if so, what is the likelihood of being accepted? When I went to Pomona, I absolutely loved it! I love Cal, but I don't know if I want to spend another 4 years in the Bay. I went to middle school and high school in Berkeley, and it may just drive me nuts. Lol. But who knows, I'm trying it out for this first year. Help! What can I do?

It’s definitely possible to transfer from Cal (it’s possible to transfer from any school for that matter). Just get a good GPA, get involved at Cal right off the bat with a couple clubs, and find a couple of profs that will be able to write you good recommendations.

If I were you I’d try to give Cal a shot and if you really think you’d be better off at Pomona then start working on the application.

I just transferred from Cal to Pomona after one year. So, yes, it is possible!

That’s good. I’m definitely giving Cal a chance, though.

kmg- How was the transfer process like for you? How do you like Pomona as opposed to Cal? & why did you choose to transfer out? Haha sorry for all the questions, just super curious now since you’ve basically done what I plan on doing. Was the transfer process hard?

I’m glad to answer questions. I thought the transfer process was much less stressful than the first go round (especially since you know you are already in college, and a good one at that). Yet, Pomona is not the easiest place to get into as a transfer–I think they accepted less than 10% this year, and I luckily got off the waitlist over a month into summer. But I would really take MNKeeper’s advice, I almost did everything he said. Good GPA, clubs, getting close to Profs/Grad Instructors, and make sure you tell Pomona exactly why it is the best place for you and what you will contribute back. I chose to transfer because I always wanted a tight-knit community at a smaller school and Pomona seemed like the perfect place for that. But I would definitely give Berkeley a chance. By no means do I dislike the school, and a ton of people love it there. Good luck!
