Transfer

So I am a first-semester freshman at Creighton and I really hate it here. I've been thinking of transferring to Iowa (which was my second choice school, but now the one I want to be at). I've made up my mind that I will transfer to Iowa, but I'm not sure as to when I should do it.

Should I stick out the whole year here (even though I'm really unhappy) or switch at the semester?

Thanks! Go Hawks!

Well, red, here’s my opinion as a parent of a 2010 freshman. I’ve made it clear to my kids that if, after one year, they don’t like the school they’re at, they can transfer. No one should feel compelled to do 4 years at a school they don’t like. But they are obligated to complete one year because one needs to make a serious go of it before s/he can really determine if it’s the right or wrong place. Obviously, something attracted you to Creighton over Iowa. How did it suddenly vanish in the span of 1 month? To “hate” the school after such a short time suggests that either your initial research was really superficial or that you’re making a limited effort at making Creighton work. Your situation sounds a bit too much like quitting to me, and that’s never cool. Being unhappy after making a serious effort is entirely different.

I suggest you have an honest conversation with your parents about the problems you see at Creighton. They can help you brainstorm some solutions. My guess is that they’ll suggest you find something on campus that interests you, be it intramural sports or rock climbing club. This is your 100% fastest, most surefire of meeting kids who are LIKE YOU. And what happens when you meet people like you? You start having fun and being happy. And if this and the other ideas don’t work out, fine. Transfer at the end of the year.

Got to pipe in here, too. My nephew hated his college after one month into it. He really didn’t like the people. Thought they were a bunch of ignorant rednecks. And this was at a pretty prestigious small school with lots of history, not a state flagship.

For some reason, he took a liking to a small college in Florida, near the beach, and decided he would transfer there.

Like Beastman suggested, he stayed through the spring. Well, he was noticed by many upperclassmen in the library always studying, and they invited him to be a housemate with him, as he was clearly the kind of roommie they were looking for, one who was interested in his studies and not just getting drunk all the time.

So, he’s now in his second year at this school he wanted to transfer out of after a month.

So, there’s hope. If there’s too much partying, go to the library and meet people there. If there’s not enough partying on campus, find local hangouts nearby.

Stick it out. Find clubs. Work out at the rec center. Go to religious services on or near campus. Broaden your horizons beyond your dorm and your classes.

Most importantly, though, keep your grades up! If do want to transfer, you want to have a good GPA so that you have your best chance of getting in.
