Im a current EECS student at U of M (Computer Engineering), and i was wondering if I wanted to transfer where should I apply for ? considering the school's reputation and the reputation in my field. When I applied to U of M it was a target school for me.

Since Michigan is #5 in Electrical Engineering and #6 in Computer Engineering, I would say that there are only three schools worth looking into:

Cal-Berkeley
MIT
Stanford

No other university is considered better than Michigan in your field.

MIT seems incredibly hard to transfer into. According to College Board, only 6 of 302 applicants got admitted.

25% of applicants (very large pool) get accepted to UC Berkeley and 100/1345 got into Stanford.

No doubt about it. MIT and Stanford are vurtually impossible to transfer into and Cal is also very tough. The 25% rate is actually misleading since Cal is obligated to California Community Colleges. I would say that for OoS transfer applicants, Cal accepts much less than 25%, especially into their college of Engineering.

But there aren't any other schools I would recommend leaving Michigan for. Illinois, CMU and Cornell are Michigan's equals in Engineering and most other schools would simply be weaker.

Note that CalTech and Princeton do not accept transfers.

From the three you mentioned and the equivelants of michigan in engineering, what's the ranking for their competitivity. I want to know so I dont end up transfering to a harder/more work school. I'd rather have my gpa go up than down...

I would say Cal and MIT are tougher and the others are equally hard. You should forget transfering to an equal (or slightly superior in the case of MIT, Stanford and Cal) program and having an easier academic time.

I think that Cal Tech does take a few transfers every year.

Thank you all for your replies!

Is there a particular reason you want to leave Michigan?

EECS is Electrical Engineering, Computer SCIENCE. Not computer Engineering. And you choose one of them, Electrical Engineering, OR Computer Science. So what schools would be ranked higher than Umich in Computer Science?

yea why do u wanna leave? what don't you like?

For graduate schools: UM is 6th in electrical engineering, 6th in computer engineering, and 14th in computer science.

Elec Engin
1) MIT, UC Berkeley; 3) Stanford; 4) UIUC, 5) Caltechc

Comp Engin
1) MIT; 2) Stanford, UC Berkeley, 4) UIUC, CMU

Comp Sci
1) MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, CMU; 5) UIUC, 6) Cornell; 7) UT Austin, U Washington; 9) Princeton; 10) Wisconsin - Madison, Caltech; 12) Maryland - College Park, GeorgiaTech

For undergrad last year (2005), Michigan was 5th in electrical engineering and 6th in computer engineering. Don't know computer science.

Elec Engin
1) MIT, 2) Stanford, 3) UC Berkeley, 4) UIUC

Comp Engin
1) MIT, 2) UC Berkeley, 3) Stanford, 4) UIUC, 5) CMU
[Note: The 2006 rankings have Stanford as 2nd and Berkeley as 3rd)

yeah. i have a question for the d3aj. why are you leaving michigan?

MatthewM04, thanks for your informative post color=blue[/color].

BTW, what is the source of these rankings?

You're welcome. They're from US News and World Reports.

Yes, EECS stands for electrical engineering and computer science but it does include computer engineering. At least in michigan that is.
I hate the weather here in michigan plus this university is way under rated, at least thats how i feel.

If you are leaving for the weather and because it is "underrated", you only have a couple of options.

Cal
Caltech
MIT (although the weather is just as bad)
Stanford

All other schools will be equally "underrated". I put the word in quotation marks because the only place where Michigan is underrated is in the eyes of people who are:

1) Jealous
2) Ignorant

Anybody who is objective and educated knows that Michigan is one of the top 3 universities in the Midwest and one of the top 10-15 universities in the nation.

Why would you leave because it's "underrated"? Since when does University ratings mean anything at all?

Michigan is a phenomenal university. I don't understand why you would want to transfer out. It's very good in the fields you are interested in.

Underrated? Maybe. But if you do your research, you'll discover that UM is one of the best, most well-rounded schools around. I'm glad I'm here..so far.

how about you just finish what you've started and then go to grad school at berkeley or wherever?
