transferring....again

Hello,

I recently transferred from my 1st college(after the 1st year) to URI (University of Rhode Island). However, I already feel like I will be transferring again. I don't want to keep going through this, as it's taking up more time than I would like.

I want to study music (I'm looking at Manhattan School of Music's graduate joint degree in performance and education as a goal), but I want to stay in the New England-NY-and possibly Pennsylvania area. I'd prefer to be in or near Boston due to the musical opportunities available there.

I currently have a 3.1 GPA (although I'm not sure what it will be when I begin school @ URI in the fall, I'm certain I can raise it) SAT: Verbal 620, Writing 580, Math 490.

I'd prefer schools that have a spring transfer option, but any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

musiclover365, what have you done? What classes have you taken? Why have you made changes? What experience do you have that will will make you successful in the music field? Why would you start at URI when you know you don’t want to be there? Seems like you are on a merry-go-round and want to jump off. Give us more info and we’ll see what we can do to help.

I don’t think it makes sense to transfer twice—you are losing credits every time you do that, which is costly, both in terms of time and money. Why would you start at URI if you think you will want to transfer again, especially as soon as spring semester?

I think you may want to give a little more information about yourself (or refresh what you may have already written), so people have some basis on how to guide you.

-Are you looking to transfer into an academic program while studying privately then go for your masters? Or are you currently in a music program and want to find another one? And why do you want to transfer when you haven’t even started school #2? Is it because you want to do music and this program was academic?

-What instrument(s) do you play, and what is your background on it (how long have you studied, reportoire you are working on, etc)?

These are relevant questions if people are going to suggest things. If you were thinking of trying a conservatory/stand alone music school (which would prob be very, very difficult as a transfer) your academics wouldn’t matter as much, for example.

Given that your goal is a masters program in a conservatory or the like, you potentially could be better off finishing at the school you will be attending and studying privately to get your playing level up to snuff. Performance at MSM on the masters level alone is not easy, and with music ed it could be even more difficult, and a lot depends on your instrument, it can be a lot harder to get into the program on Piano or Violin for example then another instrument might be, which is why knowing what you play and what level is important.
