So here's my dilemma. I'm currently a music major at the University of Florida. When I was accepted to this school I had just over a 3.0... so my reason for getting in here was not my academic record. It was the fact that I am a pretty accomplished musician (lots of high honors having to do with music). Anyway, unfortunately since being accepted I have come to realize that I do not want to be a musician after graduation.... What I really want is to major in Journalism/Communications. Because of admission conditions and other s*** I am NOT able to switch my major. The only way I can pursue the major I really want would be to transfer from UF. The best I can do here is a "Music with Outside Field" degree which means being able to choose about 9 classes of another field in addition to completing my regular music degree requirements. To be honest I don't have much interest in my music classes and most often I feel like I'm wasting my time learning about stuff that I likely won't use later. I have to take piano classes, flute lessons, ensemble rehearsal twice a week, music theory (which is almost like math for music majors)....

I understand that UF is considered an excellent school and there's only about a 6% transfer rate here... Would it benefit me more to stay here and finish my music degree or transfer to somewhere like USF or UNF where I can pursue the major that I really want?

EDIT: Another question.... what's up with colleges that don't say anything about wanting recommendation letters? Send them anyway???

If I were in your position, I’d go after the major and transfer to another school if possible. It seems that you do not feel academically fulfilled at your current school with the music classes that you are currently taking.

Is there are a way of switching a major later? If you can switch majors within a semester or two, it may be worth it to stay at UF and avoid the hassle of a transfer.

I’ve DEFINITELY looked into that… But unfortunately I would need a bunch of courses to be eligible to switch my major. By that time it wouldn’t even be worth it because I’d be too deep in the music degree. Grrrr

Can you pursue a dual degree? When my sister was at UF she was in the business program. She thought about pursuing a nutrition degree in one of the other colleges. She didn’t end up doing it because she would have had to stay a fifth year, but from what she said doing something like that was pretty common.

We were just up at UF recently for an audition for their music school and I am pretty sure they said they have a program now where you can earn a double bachelors (one in music and one in another area) in 4 years. Not sure if you would be interested in the double major though since it sounds like you aren’t interested in music anymore - but just a suggestion if you want to stay at FL to maybe check into that.

How tough was it to get into FL music program? It seems very, very competitive. There were a lot of kids there auditioning. Did you have to have stellar grades/test scores? Or, do they take into account letters of recommendation, extra curricular activities, and music honors? Just curious…

Good luck to you! Hope you are able to find a good alternative so you can get the degree you are looking for.
