Transferring back to "home state"

Hi all, this is my first post here but I have been on this website before for some general information.

I'm currently enrolled in a public 4-year school in Virginia, but I am realizing that paying out-of-state tuition is really stressing me out. I've taken over $15,000 in private loans for just this year, as well as maxing out federal loans offered to me. (My financial aid package didn't include any grants)

I'm originally from Pennsylvania, but I lived in Alabama with my parents for the year prior to starting college in Virginia. If I were to transfer from my current school to one in Alabama would I be eligible for in state tuition? Would it make a difference if I wait until the end of my freshman year?

I am really loving the school I'm at, but I just feel like I won't be able to fully "experience" college because of how worried I am about the debt I'm going to be racking up while I'm here.

Any advice/answers to my questions would be greatly appreciated.

If your parents are still in Alabama, transfer back to UAB is going to reduce your COA and perhaps you will be eligible for scholarships or FA.

If I do transfer I will probably live with my parents while going to community college first. (what I probably should have done in the first place) Do you believe that I will still be eligible for in-state tuition even though I moved for a semester, or will that be based on my parents? Also how will my loans be handled, would the funds be transferred automatically or will they be sent to me?

Determination of instate tuition is based on your parents resident status. FA from one state to the other is not transferable, but FED loans and grants are standard for all US citizens.
