1) I’m currently attending a community college in Connecticut (3.93 GPA, honors program, excellent ECs, homeschooled with great record) and never really thought I’d have a realistic shot at Barnard until reading that they accept 39% of their transfer applicants, which is quite high when compared to some other colleges I’m looking at. (It’s 19% at Vassar, just as one example.)

Can anyone who’s gone through the transfer process tell me a little about it? Do you know if they prefer community college students (like Williams, Wesleyan, Cornell, and many others)? What type of record do transfers typically need for Barnard?

2) What are classes like at Barnard? In the pictures on the website, it looks like they’re all held in giant lecture halls where you need to take notes on your lap. Is this a wrong impression? Would I even get to know my professors? Is there any discussion?

3) I’m planning on making my first visit either in spring 2006 or (much less likely) this fall. What do you recommend seeing? What should I not bother with? I think I’d likely spend an entire day there so I can explore the neighborhood. (By the way, how safe is the campus?)

4) I would be transferring in to be a Medieval & Renaissance Studies major. Can you tell me a little about the program?
