College:
-University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign (College of Business)
-Sophomore (Class of 2016)
-Finance major (want to change)
-2.82 GPA

I turned down a lot of great private schools to attend my local state flagship for money reasons as well as the desire to be close to home (Chicago suburbs).

I could waste everyone's time about the reasons why I've done poorly in college, but I'll cut to the chase for this first post. The only essential fact is that I live with a debilitating illness that I thought I could survive on my own, but simply can't.

I want to leave UIUC and go to Harper College in my hometown to be closer with my parents, or at least to go to Santa Monica College and live with my older brother. As long as I'm with family.

Is there any hope for me to somehow start fresh in community college (as if I were a Freshman again) and transfer to a 4-year after two years?

In other words, can I simply 'start over'? I don't care if my credits are invalidated as long as I have the chance to "re-do" college without all the baggage my current grades are carrying on me. I want to change my major to something I actually like (History) with the hopes of going to grad school for something along the lines of International Relations afterwards.

The struggles of my illness along with all else have become overbearing and I can't go it alone any longer. I could have easily carried a >3.5 GPA if I had the support of my family as well as the extra "motivation" to do work I not only enjoyed, but would have excelled at (ACT: 35 English, 32 Reading, 12 Writing).

What options do I have?

Thank you in advance for all constructive responses

You can’t dump your old grades if they are transferable. Usually everything from a legitimate 4 yr is transferable. Classes such as Real Estate or Allied Health usually aren’t transferable. Classes such as stuff Computer Information Systems 100 or Auditing are usually only transferable to CSUs.

The way CC works here in CA is as follows. You complete IGETC (the Universal California GE pattern) and your major pre-reqs than transfer into a university. Most Liberal Arts Majors only have a handful of pre-reqs. STEM, Econ and Business usually require quite a bit more. Then you transfer into a big public university like USC, Cal, UCLA, … UCI, UCSB… CSULB, CSUF, etc. It’s almost impossible to transfer from CC to a top small LAC.

If you come to CA CC, you will need 30 units to gain CCC trainer priority. 30 units will be enough to finish off any GE or major-pre reqs you want. By my math you can raise your GPA to about 3.3ish. Basically you’ll have a shot at 2nd tier UCs such as UCSB, UCI, etc and CSUs. Assuming you aren’t over a unit cap. I don’t think you will have much chance of getting into UCLA or UCB or even USC.

USC is NOT a public U–it is a private. It does take transfers but is pretty selective AND expensive. It does NOT tend to award much merit aid to transfers either. My D was a transfer to USC. When she applied, she had a 3.8 GPA after 1 semester at CC. She was admitted to begin after completing 3 semesters of CC.

I’m afraid you can’t start over. When you apply for a transfer, you need to send transcripts from all previous college enrollments, and schools check your records here:

^ Maybe. Depends on how they see it. Basically his illness caused the problems the 1st time at university, what is to say it won’t cause problems the 2nd time?

Furthermore CSUs and all UCs besides UCLA, UCB, UCM and UCI WON’T read personal statements. So it won’t matter.
