College GPA not great... transfer options?

Hi,

After a year and a half at my current school, I've decided to transfer. I'm a bit burnt out, and I've lost my direction, so I'm taking a semester off to figure things out. I'll be taking classes part time at my local CC while working to start paying off my loans. This being said, when it comes to transferring, I'm really worried about my GPA. I currently have a 2.729, and many of the schools that I'm looking at transferring to require a 3.0 gpa minimum (I'm looking for a school of similar caliber to the one I currently attend). This semester hasn't gone over well, and I'm really worried that my GPA is going to drop again. Do I bother with the 3.0 schools, or should I risk it? My current GPA is definitely not representative of the work I can do. If I do really well at the CC, would that help my case?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,

The key is figuring out why you’ve lost direction, and making sure you are back on track when you do return. The time off should do you good, and yes, I think if you do well, that should help your application. It may not be enough to push you into the admit pile, but it never hurts to apply.

Would there be a chance of you returning to your old school, once you find that direction again?

Thank you for the reply!

To be honest, I don’t think I ever really had any direction. It was just “achieve until you hit the next milestone, and then start for the next one after that.” I actually wanted to take a gap year before starting college, but my parents said no.

In regards to returning to my current school, the only way that I will return is if something doesn’t go right at home (didn’t get into any schools, etc). While I am keeping my options open by taking a leave of absence instead of withdrawing, that is merely just to cover my bases. Returning probably wouldn’t do me much good, as there are more issues than just being burnt out (too expensive, no friends, etc).

How would they look at my gpa? Both institutions’ grades mixed together? I’m technically not transferring to the CC, but I will be enrolled part time. I’m also trying to get an internship to make my time off more relevant. Does anyone have any other tips for making my application stronger?
