Hi,
I'm attending FSU right now and spoke with an NYU adcom who told me my best bet was to switch to a higher ranked school, before applying.
Stats:
College GPA: 3.65, after this semester(spring) either 3.72 or 3.81
HS GPA: 4.3
SAT:1170/1800
ACT: 27
EC: HS: Swimteam, several clubs, College: Several Clubs

My status is sophmore since spring, because I brought in some summer college credits before my freshman year.
Can anyone tell me if these stats are good enough for any of the following?
NYU, Northwestern, UC Berkley/LA, Cornell, GW.
I checked out some schools GPA requirements but they vary by Sophmore/Junior standing.

Edit: Oh. My major is Engineering right now. I dont know if that makes a difference

You have really good chances, but apply to other good schools that are more “safe matches”. It is not because your grades aren’t good enough, but because overachievers get denied at these schools (2% average of acceptance for transfers). But I think you are totally right about transferring for better chances.

There are several threads on the Pre-Med topics forum that discuss whether or not a more prestigious UG college will help with admission to Med school, here is a recent one:

There are also threads on the same forum that discuss the pros and cons of transferring when planning on applying to Med school (do a Search for ‘transfer’ there).

Note: several of the posters on the Pre-Med forum are current Med students and are extremely helpful and knowledgeable (norcalguy, bigredmed, BlueDevilMike and others)

Well I really wanna go NYU med and Im pretty sure the Adcom knows what hes talking about. So if he says it would be wise to transfer, thats what Ill do.
Im in state for FSU right now. UC would be out of state, but more prestigious, Id think.

It’s great to listen to your source, but IMO the more information the better when making important decision, if comments are well founded, they’ll hold up.

Sounds like you can afford 50k/yr for a UC plus Med school, best of luck!

Well no, I dont. I expect to pay as much off as I can with scholarships and grants. I really like Cornell because of theyre Bio Engineering program. But I read that they have very strict expectations of what courses engineering transfers should have taken.

My D1 was recently admitted to FSU Med. Honestly, a high MCAT (30+) a strong GPA in core courses, competitive ECs and a solid interview will get you admitted to most med schools. Conversely, if you attended Cornell and earned a 25 MCAT and a 3.0 GPA you’re not likely to get into any med school.

I suspect the NYU guy is simply biased. It happens.

If you don’t earn the high MCAT and GPA even graduating from Harvard won’t get you admitted to an allopathic U.S. med school.
