Transferring from 2+2 (Branch Campus) Explanation

bump as people are deciding on schools…

Hello! I’m an international student who’s been accepted to Altoona campus…and I might take up 2+2 program…all I want to know is if after completing semesters in Altoona when I shift to UP would it be difficult to fit in …or it’s alright and do you hace any idea about Altoona campus… Please help out

If I am applying for environmental engineering and do not have the requirements in terms of classes completed, can I fulfill those at the beginning branch or am I guaranteed denial.

@obwian22 I know this is an old discussion but what do you think my chances are as an out of state community college student. 2.8 currently but will definitely change by the end of this semester to a 3.0+. I will have my associates at the end of this semester as well. Lots of EC including volunteering and travel sports. And I applied for criminology at the main campus.

@webster68, I’m not obwian22, but check to make sure the major you’re interested in accepts transfer students. Some impacted majors (like mechanical engineering) will not take ANY transfers from outside the PSU system, regardless of the school they’re attending or their GPA.

I checked they just said I need a 2.5 gpa no other requirements @LucieTheLakie

bump…anyone thinks Altoona will be a good fit as I am an international student and it might be tough to settle there as compared to UP…

If you have other affordable options, @MrAccountant, I would consider them seriously. State College would be enough of an adjustment for an international student; Altoona would be a bit of a shock, I’m guessing.

Were you admitted to UP? If so and you can afford it, head there!

@LucieTheLakie No…I was rejected my UP but admitted to Altoona.

What are your other options, @MrAccountant?

@LucieTheLakie SDSU , IUPUI {indirect}

@MrAccountant, is the cost essentially the same for all of them? Penn State is more prestigious than SDSU, but I’m not sure it’s worth it if you have to spend two years at Altoona first. (And you can’t beat the weather in San Diego!)

What’s the “indirect” part of IUPUI? Would you graduate with a Purdue degree? That would be a tremendous perk if you’re planning to study engineering.

If you’re going for an engineering degree, try starting a new thread in the Engineering Majors forums and get some advice there: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/engineering-majors/

This is a tough one, especially since it’s not clear to me what you can afford and whether or not you plan to return to your home country or stay in the US once you have your degree. The Engineering Majors forum is populated with some very knowledgeable practicing engineers.

Good luck!

@MrAccountant If my son was not accepted to UP for accounting he would have gone to Altoona. It was his second choice. We never visited but spoke to quite a few students who love it there. PSU has a great accounting program. The Big 4 are always recruiting there. He has a few friends who graduated from PSU and work for the Big 4 and they also go to PSU twice a year to recruit.

@LucieTheLakie I am an accountancy major. Indirect means I have to do some pre reqs before getting DIRECTLY admitted to the Kelly School of business. I guess that takes one semester or more.

@japsmom, are you international? I think it’s a very different equation for an international student than for someone in PA or even elsewhere in the US.

And, yes, if @MrAccountant is looking for an accounting degree that’s different than engineering (which is what this thread was originally inquiring about). He needs to clarify. Accounting majors for the most part do well at all these schools. It’s crazy not to factor in cost and long-term plans IMHO. (I say this as a PA resident who once lived in San Diego, FWIW.)

@japsmom I know…I have never been caught in this ugly middle position.

SMEAL vs KELLY vs SDSU … no worries bout the cost.

@LucieTheLakie whats ur best pick from my options ? oh ya I am an international undergrad.

@LucieTheLakie No we are not international. Did not realize there were different rules. And, I’m only referring to the accounting program. We know nothing about engineering

@japsmom, it’s not that there are different “rules” per se, but different rules of thumb. Penn State is expensive IN STATE; it’s extremely expensive out of state. Since @MrAccountant is an international student, I wanted him to be aware of the costs and the reality of what the environment would seem like to a student from another country.

It was my mistake to assume he was looking at engineering. This thread was originally made by someone looking at engineering, so I made a mistake in my assumptions about what he was asking.

IF cost is not an issue, for business, I’d probably go Kelly > Smeal > SDSU, but it’s got to be somewhere you can be HAPPY or else you won’t do well. Take that into consideration. Accounting is a solid major at most schools.

@LucieTheLakie and what bout overall college ? I mean taking academics , weather , activities, PARTY , job placement etc into consideration…how would you rank dem ?
