transferring from 4-year school to a UC...do I have a shot?

Okay, so here is my situation. I went to high school in California, and I still qualify for in-state tuition. After high school, I was accepted to UC Berkeley and San Diego, but not UCLA. I made the (idiotic) decision to go to NYU (CAS) instead of one of these schools despite the fact that I really can't afford it. I am now finished with my freshman year at NYU and I am considering transferring to a UC as a junior. Do I have a chance at getting into Berkeley or San Diego again, or even UCLA (doubtful)?

G.P.A.: 3.8
Major: majoring in Dramatic Literature, Theater History and the Cinema (this is within the English department in CAS), minoring in Producing (within Tisch) and Creative Writing (CAS)
Extracurriculars: This part is kind of pitiful. Freshman year all I did was act in a lot of student films and nanny for money. This summer I'm interning at a tv production company (all non-fiction, documentary-type stuff) and doing some other type of job to make money. I'm also doing a lot of writing (mostly short stories and plays), and though I've won awards in high school and stuff, I've never really submitted anything I've done to a serious contest. Hopefully I can win something. Gah. Next fall I hope to get another internship...I have my eye on interning at either Conan O'Brian/SNL/other dream show or at a casting agency or production company. I also better start doing some community service. My ultimate goal is to write for tv/film.

I would be applying as an English major with a focus on creative writing.

Christ, I don't have a chance. I should have just gone to Berkeley, then transferred to UCLA after 2 years. This blows.

No, I actually think you've got a pretty good chance. As long as you're not applying as a theatre major at UCLA, I say a 3.8 GPA at NYU is impressive.

Since you're a freshman, you have the option of coming back home for sophomore year (saving a BUNDLE of money, NYU is crazy expensive) and applying this fall, while you attend a CC. This will basically give you a solid chance at UCLA (really, hard to mess it up unless you GPA drops below 3.2, even then... there are chances).

don't get so down on yourself...it's not impossible to transfer from a 4 year...i think you actually have a good shot at transferring to UCLA or berkeley...UCSD should be a shoe-in

I agree with xleper, a 3.8 at NYU is impressive, plus you also have a lot of ECs. Even though you will be applying as a 4 yr transfer and not a CC, but I think you have really good chance.

I've considered doing this...maybe you're right and going to a community college next year is the way to go. It just sucks because I really love nyu, and I don't want to leave unless I'm going to a uc I'll enjoy somewhat. I don't want to transfer to a community college only to be stuck there forever. But it may be worth it.
