Has anyone successfully done this, and how can it be done?

I did my senior year of high school as a bridge student at community college because I wanted to challenge myself, and I applied to the schools I thought were good matches and reaches for me (Barnard, American, Wellesley, Yale, Smith, Ithaca, etc.) However, since it was a really tough admissions year I didn't fare well and I am left attending the CC for another year. I still believe that I have the high caliber academics and ECs for these top schools and I really want to go to a 4 year school as soon as possible... however, most people from CC only transfer to small, noncompetitive schools and mostly State Universities.

How can I stand out enough at a community college to gain transfer admission to top schools, perhaps even an Ivy?

Same boat as you. I’m trying this year to transfer to a top school.
It’s not going to be easy. You need to work really hard to show that you can handle the academics at one of these institutions since they are at a much higher caliber and so much more is expected from you.
Take a good load of classes; not too light and not too heavy that you overload yourself. Get the best grades you can get and try to get into an Honors program if possible. Check if you can be inducted into Phi Theta Kappa which is an honors society for community colleges.
Other than that find two or so activities that you like and invest yourself in. Maybe even get a job.
There is no secret formula for transferring, just be honest about your needs to transfer.
Good luck!

I think we need to have more details. Not getting into Yale and Wellesley is one thing, not getting into Ithaca and American another. It would be hard to see being rejected at Ithaca this year and getting into an ivy next.

So share GPA, scores and ECs so we can see the picture.

Well, here are some of my stats:

GPA: 3.89
SAT: 2150 (750 writing, 680 math, 720 CR)
ECs: Too many to go into detail, but I have four years of working on the volunteer management staff of STAND, Save Darfur and other anti-genocide organizations. I also have over 500 hours of service teaching social justice to young kids in my area, and I organized an event that raised over $6,000 for aid in Darfur. I also danced 6 hours a week while doing this and attended the bridge program at Community College, taking a 16 credit courseload. I worked as Associate Editor and Layout Editor on my school newspaper and I’m going to be Managing Editor at the CC paper in the Fall. I also am the VP of the Anthropology Club at CC.

45Days:
I’m already in the Honors program at my CC and next semester I am taking Microeconomics, Philosophy, World Archaeology, PreCalculus, and Social Problems. We have to get invited into PTK, but I am on the Dean’s List.
