Transferring from CSU to CC

Hi all,

Firstly, I don’t know if I’m posting in the right thread, so please feel free to move this to another section if necessary.

So I’m in a bit of a dilemma. I’m a freshman at CSU Northridge, and I’m about to move into my second semester, however, my interests have changed.

I recently got a job as an Animal Care Attendant, and I realized that I really, really want to work with felines and canines in the future, and I want to major in Animal Science (to pursue veterinary school later), however, my college doesn’t have that major, and I need to transfer out.

I was looking at other colleges, and I have decided that Cal Poly SLO or UC Davis are my top choices to transfer into, however, I was reading other threads and statistics, and from what I read, it’s easier to transfer into these schools from a Community College.

Also, I’m not really involved at my campus because I work about 30 hours a week, so I don’t really have time to get involved if I really want to. I guess I’m not feeling satisfied with my college life because I’m a commuter student, and I’m have trouble balancing school, my job, and a social life.

My main question is if it is possible to drop out of CSUN after my first semester is finished, and start taking units at a Community College for the spring semester (and to finish sophomore year). I really want to transfer into SLO or Davis my junior year, and I feel like CC is a better option not only because it’s cheaper (not to mention I’m basically treating CSUN as a CC), but because CC students have priority to transfer over CSU students.

You may want to look at the Davis TAG option and it does make sense to go from a CCC vs a CSU.

First of all, drop out isn’t how you want to view this… transfer to a CC, may be the best course, or it may not. It seems like semantics but, there is a process you need to follow to maintain your academic standing as a continuing student.

from your chair you need to understand that TAG required 30 units from a Ca CC when you apply. That means you need to attend a Ca CC for a year before applying for TAG - a full year before you can transfer. This will likely delay out graduation by a year or more. You can transfer to a UC without TAG with units from a CSU and CC but you’ll be missing the Guarantee TAG provides. I’d imagine a 3.5 GPA and the right courses should be sufficient to get you into Davis

Since you don’t mention tuition cost as a motivator, I’d suggest you stick at CSUN as long as you can get the courses required to transfer. In my experience, each transfer complicates your transcript and increases the odds you’ll not get credit for some of your hard work. Apply to Davis and Slo as a Jr transfer next year but note, SLO is almost impossible to transfer into from anywhere but their ‘local’ CCs.

Other CSUs to look at are CP Pomona, Chico and Fresno which are probably accessible with a 3.2+

Good Luck
