(Will be posting thread on the 'International Students' forum as well)

I'll probably be enrolling in NUS as I'm not too optimistic about getting off the several waitlists I'm on. Currently considering applying for a transfer at the end of the next academic year ... here are some questions:

1) How recognised is NUS by top US colleges (let's say, the Ivies and their peer colleges, excluding HYPS)? Will a stellar/good first year at NUS be regarded as an adequate demonstration of my academic ability?

2) What is the minimum Cumulative Average Point (NUS's equivalent of GPA) I should aim for? What were the CAPs for successful transfers in the past?

Feel free to provide links to any other resources/statistics/forums you are aware of.

NUS has a great business school, especially if you want to work in the Asia-Pacific region. If you do well in NUS, you'll find no problem in finding a good job. You don't have to go to HYPS to get a great job. About the GPA, NUS is not easy, try to get the highest as you can.

Yeah, local schools have their own advantages. However, it is not really famous in China. Haha, if u want to go to China, HYOC are the four best schools...................

My interest is in Psychology which means I'll be joining FASS

And before you ask it's definitely not because I can't gain admission into other courses

Public perception of FASS seems to be rather negative ... I think few would disagree with the notion that I'm probably better off in the US/UK for arts and social sciences (would like to be proven wrong though)

While I fully intend to experience the faculty for myself before making any judgements, my current plan is to do very well in my first year and earn a transfer elsewhere.

Just wanted to know if there are any benchmarks I should set for myself

Hi, I'd also like to know how one should go about transferring from NUS. Like the OP, I'll matriculating in FASS (though next year, not this); but unlike the OP (perhaps), money is a big concern for me. Does anyone else have any advice, especially about intl fin aid?

hey Anomandaris I'm a Singaporean but am currently -forced to- study in Taiwan lol I was going to NUS for sociology but somehow found myself in a worse situation.

basically, I don't think NUS (as most universities in Asia) is recognized for their arts faculty, but that gives you a legitimate reason to transfer. Also, unlike how admission works in Singapore and perhaps the UK, I feel that the system in the States makes it very hard to draw a sort of 'benchmark', granted that you have reasonable grades, since things like essays and ECs play a significant part too.

perhaps you could start by 'stalking' some of the transfer threads of whichever school you're interested in? I must warn you it's addictive :)

qwing, sounds like you still have one more year to make your applications. Any reason why you don't intend to to reapply as a freshman?

jeyy, I'll probably be attempting to transfer into UK universities at the same time. Are there benchmarks for those? Also, will my EC involvement in NUS be considered in my transfer application?

jeyy: eh, I thought Taiwan's universities were pretty good? I mean at least they seem to have a wider range of offerings than NUS; though of course you may want more.

Andomandaris: My A lvl results were pretty shabby (3 A 1 C), so I don't really want to trouble my teachers for what will be a long shot at winning fin aid. Not that close to them either, and they'll be busy enough as it is with the current batch of J2s.
