I’m applying as a transfer to the Government major, because I don’t have my second calculus credit yet, but I’m worried about gaining admission. My first calculus class really took a toll on my GPA last semester, and even though I’m at Notre Dame, I’m not sure how much that matters for transfers. If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated!

I cannot guess on your chances of transferring.
Calculus however I know something about. To me it depends a lot on the prerequisites, such as algebra, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. How hard you will find calculus is going to depend upon how strong you are in these prerequisites. Also, tutoring can help a lot with calculus. I am thinking that you might want to get a tutor and/or talk to the professor and work hard to pull up your calculus grade for this semester.
I was a math major, and took a few economics classes. As a math major, I found that econometrics was one of the most difficult math classes that I ever took. I loved it. However, getting a strong foundation in math is probably a good idea for an economics major, particularly if you want to take any econometrics.
@DadTwoGirls Thanks for the advice! I actually did do both group and private tutoring last semester, but the math department at Notre Dame isn’t great, so it didn’t help much, and I ended up with a C+ (it did a significant amount of damage to my GPA, because it was a 4-credit class, but I did well in all of my other classes). So, I decided to take Stats for Economics this semester, rather than taking my second calculus course, which I’ll either do this summer or next fall.
Good luck with this. I have heard great things about UT Austin. Being in-state will probably help you.
