Transferring from Penn State (biz school) to NYU (arts&sciences). Dumb move?

I thought I'd post this here because my mom used to tell me that my elders were wise or something.
Whatever the case may be, input from some knowledgeable parents definitely can't hurt.

Here are the facts.

Finance major (the most competitive biz major, 3.4 GPA+ required) at Penn State's Smeal College of Business

For most part, people tell me that going to NYU (and doing a respectable major there) is better than any degree from Penn State, regardless of business school or not.

Is this the case?

There’s no blanket answer here. If NYU is a better fit and you can afford it, go for it.
These are very different campus cultures…
You’ll get some more prestige, and the advantage of being able to do internships in the city (if there are any left!)
Finance is not the best major right now. Used to be good. Tough to find a job now though.
That said, I know lots of very successful PSU Smeal grads…maybe cause I’m right here in PA.
There was a guy on these board a while back who transferred from PSU Smeal to Mich economics…at a much higher cost…thinking it would be a major move up. I don’t think he found that it was…although Mich certainly has more prestige. The grass is always greener…

My son is a senior at NYU with an economics major and minor in math and business. He loves living in NY and the intellectual NYU students that he has been able to meet. But he has been frustrated time and time again at his inability to access the Stern classes. Most of his economics classes have been extremely large and disappointing (while his friends with other majors in CAS have had quite a different experience). As in the rest of the country, he was unable to find an internship in the city this summer, even unpaid. Meanwhile, his Stern friends had access to internship fairs and directories that he did not. This semester is the first time that I have ever seen him excited about his classes. I would suggest talking to the economics department and asking some pointed questions before you transfer.

Most people are wrong. More so now than a few years ago. Hard to say where things will be in a few years. NYU Econ =/ Harvard or Pton econ as far as getting NYC jobs.
