Hello,
I am currently a student at SMU, a private 4 year in Dallas, who is on the pre-med track. I transferred into SMU Spring 2019, as I took a semester off to work. I have been underwhelmed at my experience at SMU so far, and while I think while a majority of professors my professors are fabulous, I don’t find myself fitting in. Also, living on campus is expensive, off campus housing is also expensive bc its highland park area, and I tried commuting last semester and it was not good–my grades suffered. I like the majors and the overall academics, like a lot, but I’m not sure if it’s worth accumulating debt for, especially considering I intend on going to med school which I’ve heard is the real sucker punch.
So I was considering transferring again to University of Houston and finishing my undergrad there. I’ve heard UH is not as competitive and honestly, that’s fine by me. My only concern how will medical schools view my transferring. It’s cheaper and while the faculty to student ratio isn’t as ideal, I don’t think it’s detrimental.
So I guess I would like a 3rd opinion from someone who hasn’t been going back and forth with this. Is it sensible to transfer to UH to avoid debt, even if it means being questioned by adcoms or to stay at SMU and handle the debt and the social disconnect at the expense of really good profs and academics?
