Hi, I am going to be a high school senior next year and I've been doing some serious college searching this summer.

What my plan is so far is to go to Syracuse University for my core classes for 1 or 2 years, get a 4.0 GPA there, then transfer over to Cornell U., Stanford, or MIT to major in astrophysics or physics, and minor in math, astronomy, and cosmology.

Is this a good plan?

Is anybody familiar with what astronauts picked for their major? I am very geared towards math and physics, so that's what I'm majoring in. But what do I choose; Physics, or astrophysics?

You can HOPE and TRY to get a 4.0 at Syracuse and HOPE and TRY to be accepted as a transfer to Cornell, Stanford or MIT, but you certainly can’t PLAN on these things happening. Go to a college where you can major in your area of interest and be happy for four years since your plans may never come to fruition.

Let’s see. Cornell accepted 22% of transfers and need to see your HS info. Stanford accepted <2% of transfers and need to see your HS info. MIT accepted <4% of transfers and need to see your HS info. How does that plan look now?

Graduate school is what really matters. Just stay there, you will save some money too! And along with a great GPA at Syracuse, you also need to be really active in clubs and the community!

I think its a poor plan. Transfer admissions at elite colleges is more difficult than admissions as a frosh. Not only that, but even if you do succeed you’ll not have the same undergrad experience as most other students. Frosh year is a trying process and a lot of friendships are formed as you all go thru the process together, while you’ll be off at some other school. And while other students will have 3 years to get to know some profs who can give recs for grad school (you apply senior year in college), you’ll have one. I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

Thank you very much guys I think I will stay at Syracuse; it’s going to make for a great experience, plus I’m going to get recommendations for grad school. I feel awesome now because I’ve made my decision!

@ the OP - Don’t “plan” on transferring to one of the aforementioned schools but I don’t see why you can’t give it a shot if it’s something you really want to do. Just a year ago, I was in the exact predicament that you’re currently in; although I was at a lesser school (DePaul). However, I was happy at DePaul and would have stayed for 4 years had I been rejected to both Vandy and NU. Well, that wasn’t the case and now I’m headed to a top 20 :)
