Transferring here after two years from another UC?

What are the chances of me being able to transfer here after two years at UCR and what can I do to boost them? I got waitlisted this year (and later rejected cause no one got off the waitlist) and I really wanted to go here and major in Technology and Information Management. I'm currently a Pre-Business major at UCR and the way it works is that in your third year you choose an emphasis for your business major (ie finance, marketing, etc) and mine will be Information Systems. Some of my prereqs seem to be the equivalent of the prereqs for the TIM major at UCSC. I can fulfill anything that can't be fulfilled at UCR next summer at my local CC and I also know about UC-UC reciprocity in terms of GEs. I do plan on getting involved as much as I can on campus also.

I know UCs give first priority to CC transfers but my parents don't want me going that route unless I'm aiming for UCB, UCLA, UCSD and/or UCD but they don't have the majors I want. Also because of budget cuts it may take longer than 2 years at a CC and plus this way if the transfer doesn't work out I still have UCR to fall back on.I know this sounds a bit, probably super crazy but I don't want to give up just yet.

I think if you keep your GPA high and the major you want to transfer in then you have a good shot. Also make sure you have a good reason why you want to transfer.

Do you have to list a reason? I know they say “compelling reason” but I haven’t seen a lot of people doing intercampus transfers mention a reason.

Hey bud I think I can help you out. I went to ucr for two years and this coming fall I’m attending ucsc as a transfer.

First things first, transferring from a UC to another UC is the SAME difficulty as transferring from a CC. You will need to maintain a similar GPA, and take similar classes as CC students to get in. They uphold you to the same prerequisite classes (Usually something like two English quarters and one math quarter or something, it’s different for every UC). In addition to these requirements, you should attempt to finish all of UCRs “Breadth” (General education) classes by the end of your second year.

ALL CLASSES YOU TAKE AT UCR WILL TRANSFER CREDITS TO UCSC. Yes, you read that right. In addition, there is such a thing as UC reciprocity, where if you complete all of one UCs general education requirements, you are exempt from doing the ones at the UC you transfer to. You should coordinate closely with your academic advisor to finish these, BUT if you’re missing 1-3 ish classes by the end it’s not really a big deal.

FINALLY, a word of advice for this plan. Looking back, I wish I didn’t go into UCR assuming id transfer in two years. UCR is a little bit hard to love as a school for me. If I had tried to make the best of it, I feel like I could have enjoyed it better. As it is, winding up my time here is bringing me a ton of relief as I did not enjoy my time here. I made friends, and UCR is as academically challenging and enriching as any other UC, but I did not like going to school. So, advice is go to school and get as involved as you would be as if you were staying four years. That way, you will enjoy both your time there and at SC.

I’m intensely excited for UCSC and I know it is the perfect school for me / that I’ll love it there, as I’ve already spent some time there (with a friend). If you have any questions ask me!

Some stats:
Major: Geology at UCR, applied to UCSC as Earth Science
Admitted GPA: 3.38
Xtra C’s: Newspaper, geology club

Personal statements explained that I needed to be close to SC for family, which is true but also I just wanted to go there?
