When we visited Clemson, it was specifically stated that it’s extremely difficult to get into Engineering if you aren’t accepted into it as a Freshman, but they did not address how hard it is to transfer out of Engineering into another program if a student doesn’t like engineering after the first year. Does anyone know how hard transferring within the university is? The website isn’t helpful, all they talk about is transferring into Clemson from other colleges. Thanks for any insight.

I am under the impression that Engineering and Nursing are the two hardest to get into. I would expect that transferring out of those programs is easier than getting into them once you’re at Clemson. If you have a specific program you are wondering about, I would email the specific department and ask what are their requirements for acceptance into that program once the student is there. You could email the department chairperson or an advisor. The advisors are generally easy to find in each relevant portion of the Clemson site.
Here’s what the website says about the process: http://www.registrar.clemson.edu/html/changeMjr_Curr.htm
I know that a business major, for example, has a number of core required courses, so a “sooner vs later” change would probably be helpful to your student if a change does occur. The engineering curriculum is very robust… it does not leave a lot of room for experimenting… your student could consider taking a core business (or other type of major) course in one of their elective slots.
