Transferring schools in Senior Year

So right now I attend a traditional catholic, private all girls school in the Philippines. My parents said we're moving to USA for senior year; I'm a US citizen. How will this affect the college process? How will I be ranked? Will this cause problems for me?

I did that this year (currently a senior). It will almost certainly make the application process more difficult for you, especially because you’re moving from a whole other country.

You’ll have to stay in very close contact with your teachers and guidance counselor through email. You’ll probably have to ask for recs from your junior year teachers, and it’s a lot of extra work for teachers when they have to deal with students who have moved, so I’d start kissing up now if I were you.

You will be ranked only by your current school if you apply ED/EA, and ranked by both your current school and new school (assuming they rank) if you apply ND. You will need transcripts from both schools, but still only one guidance counselor recommendation, if that’s required.

Was it hard? My current school doesn’t rank… So will they just send my GPA?

Yeah, just GPA then.

Do you move often? I move around once every one and a half years, so this is pretty run of the mill for me. If you move much at all then I don’t think you’ll find it’s a big deal.

But if this is something new for you, then yeah, it’s probably going to suck a lot. Cliques are very much set in place by senior year, and since you’re on CC I’m assuming you’ll probably work too hard to be able to spend much time focusing on making friends. It’s not really that people fend you off because of their cliques, it’s just difficult to communicate with people who have all of these inside jokes and gossip that you don’t understand.

Academically I don’t find it too much more difficult, it’s just annoying having to rebuild the reputation among teachers. Kind of feels like no one trusts you. But I mean it’s not a big deal in the long run, you’ll get through it.

And the alienation is really good for focusing on college apps!

Do you know what state you’re moving to?

No, this would actually be my first move. I’ve been in the same school since 2nd grade. I really am strongly considering applying to Dartmouth through their Early Decision plan. When applying, will you be sending your new teacher recs or the ones from your old school? Would it be stupid to just ask from new teachers? And how about the guidance counselor? Cause it would be very difficult for me to reach them all the way here and ask them for recs…

I’m moving to California-which I see is over represented when it comes to college admissions. So I’m a bit worried about that.

Also, was it easy for you to sign up for AP/Honors classes?
