Currently I am a Cal State student but I have been doing research on the possibility of trying to transfer some of the units I already completed to a community college to transfer to the UC system. I understand that I could try to transfer from Cal State but that my chances are very low which is why I am considering trying to go through the transfer process as a community college student.

I spoke to a counselor at a community college, a transfer counselor, and a UCLA peer mentor, but all three told me different things. I understand that the school will only accept a certain amount of units but I was wondering how many units do I have to take to be considered as a community college student as opposed to one from a cal state. I have not resigned my position as a Cal State student yet because I was waiting to see if this is possible. I do also realize that I may have to retake some of the upper division at a UC school if I am accepted.

The reason I am trying to switch schools this late in my school career is because there have been many personal family reasons which have affected my class work in the last couple of years. Ive tried talking to the advisors and head chair of the department at Cal State but they can not assist me in the process and are not too helpful. Ive come to realize the system at this school isnt the best and is hindering my graduation process. At the rate it would take to graduate, it would be equivalent to spending a year or year an a half at a community college. The reason it is taking so long is because I can not add a class until I get added in by the instructor. Ive tried adding for the last year and I still have not been able to add. This delays the process since I need these classes to unlock the next.

I understand my situation and I have done the research to stay at school or try to take some units to a community college to start from there even if it means to retake some upper division classes. I need to know all my options so that I could either stop attending Cal State to transfer as a community college student or if this is not possible to stick to the path I have at Cal State no matter how difficult the process to add can be. I would much rather go to a UC even if I have to re-take some classes, but I would like to be able to transfer over at least my general education courses and lower division major courses if possible. If not how many would I be able to transfer over? I currently have 130 units at a Cal State but would like to start somewhat fresh and improve my grades. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

first off, if you have over 80 units from a CSU which are transferable, you’re ineligible. PERIOD.

your last institute attended must be a CC, that is all. so basically 1 unit if I’m not mistaken.
up to 70 transferable semester units will transfer if I’m not mistaken. Not all units from a CSU are UC transferable. This is where research and the like comes into play.

your CSU grades WILL stay, at least as far as grad schools are concerned. the UCs have their own method for calculating GPA based on UC transferable classes and AR, it’s generally liberal. Non-UC transferable courses and your grades in them are looked at though, even if the weight isn’t heavy

[Welcome to ASSIST](http://assist.org) lists all the courses you need.
so do the courses listed on assist.org and knock out IGETC and you’re pretty much in. a 3.0+GPA will get you into at least a few of the mid and lower UCs…

also, wow 130 units, that’s A LOT, that’s enough to graduate, gotta love the CSU system…
that said… 130 units from a 4 year… you might not even be eligible, I think there’s an 80 transferable unit cap, not sure though as I just did CC ==> UC. if you have 80 or more units which can potentially transfer, you aren’t even eligible. courses at a CC don’t add to that limit

I totally understand what you mean but what if I wanted to just transfer over my GE’s and then retake my major courses, would that be possible ?

^no way! im sure a ton of people would love to do that. nice try though.

I see, I explained myself in the wrong fashion. What I really mean since I’ve done most of my general ed. can I transfer them to eliminate all the pre-req courses to take only the UC transferrible courses at the community college. I understand I still need my full 60 units there , I would just like to know since I’m doing it this way, if let’s say for example a chem class requires a lower chem class and if i took that lower class at the CSU can I take the next class at a community. I took chem 101 and 102 and now I need Ochem, so would those 2 transfer over so I can take Ochem. I also understand that you guys are coming at me as a Cal state student, but I’m wondering how many units I would need to take at a community college in order to transfer to a UC. I would intend on dropping my cal state status and restarting at a community college. My question is…how many pre-reqs can I eliminate based on my CSU transcripts. I still understand that I need to take a certain amount of units at a community college.

you can do that as long as you have done done in excess of 80 TRANSFERABLE units. Most UD courses won’t be transferable and a fair number of CSU courses aren’t either. In short as long as 50+ units of your 130 do not transfer, you SHOULD be fine. Courses at a CCC don’t count towards that 80.

when I say ineligible I mean you have close to a 0% chance of them accepting you. your GE courses would except it doesn’t make a bit of difference.
