This question is directed mainly to current UCSD students, but any answer would be great! So after being lucky enough to get accepted, I realized that I accidentally applied for computer science in the math department (I know, major screw up), when I really want to do computer science in the engineering school. Assuming I am qualified enough for a spot after completing all the requirements, how hard would it be to transfer into computer science in CSE? When my brother made it into USC as an undeclared student, he asked if he could switch to computer science (very competitive major there) during the accepted student orientation, and they instantly just switched him into the classes for that major.
You can try to transfer into CSE at the end of each quarter. Admission is based solely on GPA in the four prerequisite courses. The odds of getting in vary from quarter to quarter based on how many seats are available and how many people are applying during that cycle. It’s generally hard, but not impossible.
(I’ve heard of students talking to the right people at Triton Day and getting their major changed. My friend transferred from economics to EE by talking to the Revelle provost about it. I’m not saying you should pester administrators about this, but don’t be afraid to ask them for help.)
There is a new discussion on Reddit/UCSD “CSE major change request results are out!” that indicates students may need a 4.0 in their CSE major courses to switch to a CSE major. I don’t know if it would be any easier for you since there is a great deal of overlap between your major and that one. Keep in mind that, with the UCSD grading system, an A- lowers your GPA. Many people who are unable to get accepted into UCSD with CSE settle for the CS+Math major as a substitute. They feel that once they have worked in a CS job for a few years, it won’t matter what their specific major was.
