o well, going to CMC instead

Waitlisted. I’m kind of surprised that I wasn’t rejected, but I won’t attend due to my Vanderbilt acceptance.

jjay1: How are you liking Vanderbilt? Ironically, I currently attend Pomona College and am thinking of transferring to Vanderbilt. If you have any advice or anything, I’d greatly appreciate it.

If you don’t mind me asking, why are you looking to transfer out of Pomona, Class? And why Vanderbilt?

enkephalon: My first reason is Pomona’s distance from my home (I’m almost 2,000 miles away from home). I never realized how much I’d actually miss home until I was here. Who knows, maybe it’ll wear off and I won’t feel this homesick later on in the year. Another reason is the size . . . I’m starting to think that 1,500 students is way too small for me. Sure, there are 4 other schools adjacent to Pomona, but the amount of interaction that actually goes on between the students of these schools is much less than I’d thought it would be. Also, I have been pretty disappointed with the research opportunities thus far . . . I’ve gone to the career office and looked into it, and there just isn’t much around Pomona. I have also inquired about research to several professors, and none of them have expressed interest of taking on freshmen. However, they did say that there are some freshmen who get paid internships during the summer after their freshman year, but that it’s extremely competitive to get one. My first semester professors have been average at best, and I just feel that I could be getting more from schools that are closer to home. However, if the homesickness wears off, I still might apply to some schools far away. Oh, and why Vanderbilt? I actually got in there this spring with a great scholarship package, but I passed it up for Pomona. Currently, I’m doing really well here, and I feel that I’ll have a good chance for admission. Some of other schools I’m considering applying to are Columbia, Northwestern, Pepperdine, Notre Dame, Brown, and Yale. If I do end up applying elsewhere, the school’s financial aid program will play an important role in my decision to apply there.

Thanks for the considered response, Class. I understand well that lingering homesickness can negatively affect someone’s overall happiness level. I also believe that “fit”, or comfort level, is the most important determinant of success when choosing/attending a college. Here’s hoping it passes, and that you get that research spot you’re after.

If not, hang in there, and best of luck on your applications – if you decide to go through with them.

There’s a guy here that transferred from Vandy to Pomona a couple years ago… and I just hosted a propsie who is currently at Vandy and applying to transfer to Pomona. But of course the fit of a college is very subjective.

I’m currently a freshman at CMC, which is really bad fit for me socially. I spend all my time at Pomona, and i’m hoping to transfer there. Does anyone think i have a shot transferring within the consortium?
GPA is 3.9

There’s a girl who transfered from CMC to Pomona last year for similar reasons. It’s definitely possible! Just write up some great essays and really evaluate why Pomona would be a better fit for you. Just make sure to not be too negative about CMC when doing so - a sense of community between all 5C’s is still very valued to Pomona.

etf1919, an on-campus interview can really help you in the transfer admissions process. Pomona’s admissions committee expects very good reasons for both why you’re transferring out of your current institution and why you want to transfer to Pomona specifically. An interview gives you an opportunity to present these reasons face-to-face to a real person. And since you’re in such close proximity to Pomona, you really have no excuse not to schedule an interview.
