Transferring to Rice.. how hard is it?

I'm currently a high school senior. I got accepted to the University of Washington (+ Honors) and USC. I got rejected by Berkeley and Stanford (first choice).

I'm thinking I might going to UW freshman year and applying to transfer to Rice for sophomore year.

Is it worth the effort? I'd imagine Rice would have very few spots for transfer students and it would probably be really hard.

Transfer rate shouldn’t be horrible I don’t think. I think you have a decent shot. It is a bit easier to transfer to Rice than to get in as a freshman, but this is subject to change. Out of curiosity, why are you considering Rice now? You didn’t mention it on the list of schools above.

Try, but don’t go to a school thinking you will transfer, just enjoy that place and make the most of where you go. Then apply to transfer, so regardless of where you go, you make the most of it! Good luck!

I don’t know why I didn’t apply to Rice, I kind of rushed through my app process and missed a bunch of good schools.
Yeah I will definitely try to make the most out of UW! Thanks =)

You’ve got the right idea and I just want to enforce the idea that you should enjoy your time at UW! You may find that you love it there and don’t want to transfer. I am a transfer student at Rice and love it very much, but I made the mistake of having Rice on my mind 24/7 and was absolutely miserable at my previous university! You should keep that in mind during the application process. However, you can always turn in the application and make your decision at a later time.

That being said, I did both the Rice freshman and transfer application. I didn’t find the transfer application anymore difficult than the freshman app; it was pretty much the same with one different question, I think. I’m not sure if it was because I was doing it a second time or something else. The transition into Rice was also very smooth. You get to experience O-week, which is the best orientation experience you can ever have!

Transfer rate in recent years has been about 25%. Usually around 400-500 apply as transfer students. This is higher than the regular decision admittance rate which now hovers around 17-18%.

Whatever you do, please please make the most of your time at UW! Good luck. :)
