Im still waiting to hear from other colleges (that May 15th deadline is killer) but am seriously considering going to Whitman next year. Any one else in the same boat? Where are you transferring from? Im transferring from Pitzer College, one of the Claremont schools in Southern Cal.

I’m considering applying for Fall 2010 there, so I’m no help to you. What other colleges did you apply to? Also…if you don’t mind me asking…what are your stats? There isn’t much numbers information for the liberal arts colleges on here.

I’m transferring from Carnegie Mellon; initially, when I was a high school senior first deciding where to go, it was down to Whitman or CMU and I visited Whitman and absolutely loved it, but on the plane ride home decided that it was too far away and too isolated.
I’m also still waiting to hear from other colleges.
I decided to transfer because I wanted
- more flexibility in choosing my courses
- smaller classes
- more emphasis on humanities

Things I’m worried about at whitman
- it’s still far away and isolated
- too small?
- Greek life too prevalent; I thought that the Greek life at CMU was pretty irritating. This is kind of irrational because a lot of people in the Greek system are really nice, cool people, but the whole thing really just creeps me out.

Interesting. My reasons for transferring are obviously very different than yours since I am transferring from a small liberal arts school to another fairly small liberal arts school. My primary reason is an overall lack of community and intellectual curiosity/ drive in the Pitzer student body. Also, a very unprofessional and unorganized administration (the school was just founded in the 1960s so its still adjusting I guess).

My concerns are very similar to yours though. Especially the part about the Greek System. I talked to an acquaintance who was in a Whitman sorority (and loved it) and according to her a lot of the parties have lists/ are limited to Greek students. Ive always despised the idea of lists for parties, especially at such a small school.
Also, although Whitman has a great reputation within the academic community, most people (at least in California, where I live) have not heard of it. Im willing to sacrifice name recognition for a great college experience but I need to know that Im going to have a great college experience. I made this choice with Pitzer, choosing it over UC Berkeley, and my decision kind of backfired.

Isolation Im definitely concerned about the distance of airports etc. but the Walla Walla location doesnt concern me that much. I went to college 45 mins from Los Angeles and rarely went to the city I think if the college provides a wealth of activity then you dont necessarily need a nearby city/ cultural center.

Whitman does seem like a great school. Everyone I know who has gone there has LOVED it.

I’m seriously considering attending as well! really looking forward to a small school.
