I'm a freshman at UC Berkeley. Maybe I haven't given the school enough of a chance yet, but I'm curious about how soon and how difficult it would be to transfer to Yale. I want to major in international relations. Any feedback and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yale does accept transfers but the no. of slots is very very low (20-30 per year). Given the 700+ apps, you can figure the accept rate.

[Transfer Student Program | Transfer & Other Programs | Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.yale.edu/admit/other/transfer/index.html)

“Keep in mind that admission to the transfer program is extremely competitive. Yale College receives approximately 800 transfer applications each year and admits between 18 and 35 candidates, depending on the number of spaces available. This reflects an admissions rate of between only 2% to 4%.”

Don’t scare paixdemonde away!
I transferred this year, and yes, indeed, the acceptance rate was 2.3%, which is not a lot… Still, I don’t know if my opinion is going to change, but it’s worth trying.

Just remember that they have to understand that your being at UC berkeley doesn’t make much sense when your being at Yale would.
Try not to criticize your school too much.

One other thing is that the spirit is very different: they don’t expect the same thing from a senior in high school than from a freshman or sophomore in college (it is plain, but think about it, I mean don’t try to fit to what you think they want you to be) and they don’t really want people who are extraordinary. One of their major concerns is “Is he or she going to adjust fast enough”, because wherever you end up transferring to, you will probably have no big orientation, no immediate dorm bonding and people as lost as you who just start talking and try to know if you are a potential friend, nobody will tell you that you needed to preregister in March for a class you thought no one would be interested in in september, and so on…

Applications are due about a month and half after the regular applications. Work on your essays, because they might get you in!

This might help, last year’s transfer thread:
