I was planning to transfer to another college from my previous college, Bowie State University. Bowie State University does not have everything that I need and the school is not a perfect fit for me. So, I decided to transfer to another school for the Fall 2010 admissions. I applied to 15 schools and 14 schools denied me admission ( I applied when I was a college freshman) except for the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Now,University of Maryland-Baltimore County accepted me, but they have been messing around with my college credits from Bowie State University and once I went to the Fall 2010 Transfer Orientation on August 5th and researched more information about the school, the school was not safe and the school is in an unsafe area of Baltimore county where there is a lot of crime. Also, the school was disorganized with my paperwork and I am afraid that Services for Students with Disabilities will not give me the right accommodations for me to succeed. Their "disability specialist" is a part-time person who is not even here everyday. There are certain things that I cannot do at UMBC. Also, the school does not have a good social life and do not have enough clubs/activities. Most of the clubs are not being diverse and I do not see enough races of color in extracurricular activities apart from their ethnicities.

I looked at some pictures from the clubs that school offered on their website. Also, UMBC is like at community college. I don't like what the school is having. Also, I do not like the name of the major Media & Communication Studies. I wanted the name of my major to be journalism. The school might not have a good program in my major which they don't. I am thinking about transferring to a second time by reapplyng to some schools from the Fall 2010 application. I don't know if I should try that. But, my tutor and my parents are telling me that I should stay at Bowie State University because University of MD-Baltimore County is not safe and it is too far away. I researched that I have to pay $16 dollars per transcript to sent to each school while Bowie State allows me to send transcript for free. Now, I want to contact Residence Life at Bowie State University by phone or email to see if I can have on-campus housing or is there any space or singles available for on-campus housing there for returning students. I want to tell the school the truth. I also know that I have to reenrolled and try to get the classes that I missed registering early in the Spring of 2010 for the Fall 2010 semester.

But, Univ. of MD-Baltimore County offered me housing, but I don't know if Bowie State would have extra or on-campus housing that is available. I am very concern that on-campus housing is filled. If it is filled, I cannot commute to school because I cannot drive and if did have a permit to drive, my parents or someone who is 21 years of age or older must be at the passenger's seat to see if I am following the law and that I must be safe. This is by Maryland state law and it is stated in the Driving/license manuals. I am very concern about losing credit from other schools that I am reapplying again such as NYU, Cornell, Columbia, Harvard, Duke, Yale, Brown, CMU, UC System, Stanford, USC, UMich, and several others. I have created an account for both Common Application and Universal College App. Now, most school have the same essay and while others have a new completely different essay. I am planning on working on my transfer essays only on the weekends so that I have more time for my schoolwork. I do still want to consult with the colleges before I do anything else regarding credit and transfer admission and the steps for being a good, competitive, well-rounded transfer applicant. I don't know what do if Bowie State's enrollment and on-campus housing is filled. I don't know what will the prospective colleges do if I am transferring from UMBC. I am already on the prospective colleges mailing list and they know that I am both enrolled in Bowie State and UMBC. What should I do?

Thank you.

If English is not your native language, I apologize in advance. Otherwise, based on your general writing ability, it is unlikely that you will be accepted to NYU, Cornell, Harvard, etc. I would choose whichever school you think you would be happiest attending - Bowie State or UM-BC - and go there.

You don’t even know that. First of all, I am not an international student. I am a U.S. Citizen and I was born in the U.S. So, English was my first language. Secondly, you do not even know my writing ability. I do not want to be in Bowie State or UMBC for the rest of my time in college.

if you weren’t a competitive candidate for the ivies or other top schools (especially harvard, yale, stanford) as a freshman, you will not be accepted unless you have some incredible hook which you haven’t mentioned, so i’m guessing you don’t. i also agree with culater in that your writing is pretty bad, which will also affect your application to these (and any other) schools.

depending on your stats, you may have a slight chance at the others. what are your stats?

crazygirl, I’m sorry if my comments were a bit harsh.

I would encourage you to find a school that meets your needs. My hunch is that this would be a smaller, more nurturing school with a lot of individual attention from professors.

Not only do you not have a realistic shot at acceptance to any of your “dream schools” with 340, 370, 370 SAT scores, but it is unlikely you would be able to handle the academics if you did manage to get in.

This is not the end of the world. In my opinion you will have a much better experience at a school that really fits you than you would at any of those on your reach list.

I can handle the work load. You people don’t even know my writing scores. I may write this online, but when it comes to applying for colleges, I know where to find the resources to get help when writing the admission essay. I can handle the coursework these universities have to offer for their students whether a first-time student or transfer student. Even if the work is difficult, I know the resources where to find academic help and how to ask for you. I been working dilgently for all my life, so I know how hard college coursework can be like. Even when the work is hard, Do I drop out of the class? No, I do not. I go and find the resources to succeed in the classroom such as a tutor to help me with content in academic courses that I do not understand. I even go to the professor and ask. Even if I do not understand the content in the classroom, I raise my hand in class and ask questions. So, do not think that I cannot handle coursework at some of these top 10 or top 20 schools that are ranked by U.S. News & Reports, Time, Newsweek, Forbes, Kiplinger, Fiske, Princeton Review, and other ranking system. I know based on my educational experience that I can handle the college coursework and I had proven and successfully complete those kinds of coursework at my previous insitutions. So, rigorous college coursework is not new to me.

Some of these schools do have my needs. My culumative college gpa is very high and have my other stats. I have college experience and things that I plan to make a difference in the world and achievements that could help my application. This is not freshman admission. Transfer admission is very different from that. Not only the collegework and other supplementary materials are involved, but also the course work at my previous insitution. So, you do not need to tell me that I cannot get into these schools just because my high school record is not exactly perfect. So, back off.

P.S.: I am not interested in an any smaller schools. My insitution is a small school and I do not like smaller schools.

The thing is that with some of those schools, you might not be able to “raise your hand and ask for help”. It’s not high school anymore and a lot of those professors aren’t as easily accesibile as those of a smaller school.

And id you haven’t attended any of these schools, how are you so sure that you could handle the course load to manage a decnt GPA, especially if you’re planning on going to grad school.

I think the people who replied to this thread were more put off by the fact that you were denied admissions to 14/15 schools which is pretty harsh. As for your writing I too thought maybe you were an international student but that could be coming from your comment based on diversity. I’ve seen some pretty bad writing on these forums so I sense there might be some stereotyping going on and others are just hopping on the bandwagon.

For people to make judgments based off your writing on a forum…on the internet…is idiotic. I know I can type pretty badly on the internet and not give a hoot. As my dad likes to say, “people love telling you what you can’t do”.

Now I cannot ignore the fact that you were denied admission to 14 schools. My guess is that freshmen transfers have a harder time than the usual junior transfers. Also your essay content might not be appealing. I picked up a College Admissions Essay book about a month ago and its the **** =]. It provides a lot of good advice and 50 essays that people submitted for admissions.

If your test scores aren’t that great, I say keep your gpa up and transfer in your junior year. After two years of college work from what I’ve seen universities do not need to see test scores. They can see that you can handle college coursework. I believe at that time Cornell would be a good school to apply to. Just write a kick ass admissions essay.

amber i think you’re being far too nice. even just reading the OP’s writing is making my eyes bleed.

in any case, OP, do what you want, but don’t expect any top schools to give you any love.

Again, I am very sorry if I offended you. I wasn’t basing my comment so much on the grammar of your post as I was on the 370 writing score. I understand that internet forum posts aren’t usually representative of one’s general writing ability.

You’re definitely right that test scores aren’t everything, either. Work ethic and drive count for a lot in college and beyond. By all means, shoot for the moon if you wish.

I simply believe there might be some schools out there (that aren’t on your target list) where you would not only have an easier time gaining admission, but where you would also be very happy and academically fulfilled.

I personally transferred from an Ivy League school to a much smaller school in the NESCAC. I realized that prestige =/= happiness on a one-size-fits-all level. Take from that what you will.

MeShannon, I noticed that. In most situations, the students has to find the help or the resources that they need to succeed in that particular course. I could even try to get a decent GPA for graduate school. Graduate school is difficult for everyone and for some it is easy. You have do certain coursework at the graduate level for your master’s degree, doctorate degree, professional degree, Doctor of Philosophy degree, advanced degree, and several other graduate degrees that you want in your field of study. I know that I can handle the course work at other school. I martriculated successfully during my first year of college. Most or nearly none of my professors helped me in the classroom, so I had to take matters in my own hands in order to succeed in my classes. I had to work with a tutor for certain courses that I had trouble to understand. I had to get study aids, use flash cards, study notes, educational videos that pertains to the course content. These methods that I have been using for years, I had helped me to succeed in the classroom. When it comes to the directions of a paper, research paper, an essay, or an project, I only asked the professors for clarity on the directions, if clarity is needed for me to understand. Nothing else apart from directions.

Amber2010, I do agree on what you were telling me. I do plan on transferring again to some of those universities for fall 2011 admission for junior status. Thank you for your comment.

Not to be harsh, and despite having no knowledge of your stats, I am inclined to believe that you have little chance of gaining admission to any of the schools listed. Seriously, save your time and money. I’m not trying to be mean, but you are just setting yourself up for a giant headache. I agree with Amber that making first impressions on this forum is a tremendous mistake, but I really can not see you marticulating into any of the schools you’ve listed. More so, based on the variety of schools included, it appears that you’re prestige hunting. If you are having such difficulty with the school you’re attending atm, then I would certainly suggest you do some extensive research to each school you intend on applying to. Each school you listed above is quite different from one another.

With that said, good luck.

stewartudall, I am not prestige hunting. I really wanted to attend these colleges after my senior year of high school, but my high school grades did not fit the criteria for freshman admission. My academic work at my school is really good. I have good grades at my current school and some of these schools I have mention have good programs in my major. So, I have no problems in at my current school with coursework. It is just that my current school does not have everything that I need. I know that must do research for each and every school I want to apply to. I have seen everyone comments. Please stop bashing me that I cannot transfer anywhere and trying to force me to make decisions of going to schools with easy transfer admission acceptances. please stop. I had enough of the negative commments users are trying to put on me. I know that I martriculate in any of those schools, so DO NOT TELL ME THAT I CANNOT DO THE COURSEWORK THAT EACH COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY HAS TO OFFER. I KNOW I CAN DO THE WORK. SO, STOP TRYING TO PUT NEGATIVE THINGS IN MY SITUATION. I HAVE SEEN EVERYONE’S COMMENTS, SO STOP.

you realize that we’re just trying to help you be realistic, right? had you given us stats/whatever that made us think that you had a good shot, we would have told you.

Journalism at NYU is an insanely competitive program. There is a high “weed-out” rate in the first year. Not only that, Journalism majors are REQUIRED to double major in CAS. That alone makes me feel like NYU should be off the table, because if you have not started on the requirements for either major, there is no way you will be able to finish all of the requirements in four years.

Transferring credits is a mess. I would do it as few times as possible. It might be worth taking time off if you can’t get where you need to be (in order to be sucessful).

That being said, if you are sure you want to transfer you need safeties. (Everyone needs them.) Perhaps you might want to look at bigger state schools…

crazygirl, being a URM, I can identify with you on overcoming negative hurdles and pervasive stereotypes. And, going through a round of transfer admissions this past fall, I feel we have parallel narratives. However, there are a lot of other areas where we diverge (writing ability, SAT’s, etc.).

With that said, I do not think it is a good idea for you to apply to ANY of the schools on your list. They just are not realistic choices for you. There are plenty of schools however, where you can get a quality education with “easy transfer acceptances,” as you put it.

ok. PLEASE STOP COMMENTING ON THIS FORUM.

1.) I DO NOT POST MY ACADEMIC INFORMATION/STATS ON MESSAGE BOARDS.

2.) I HAVE SPOKEN TO ALL THE UNIVERSITIES THAT I PLAN TO APPLY TO. SO, I KNOW THE REQUIREMENTS AND WHAT I NEED TO TAKE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

3.)COLLEGE_RULED, I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO GAP YEARS. I AM NOT TAKING A YEAR OFF FROM SCHOOL. I DO NOT TAKE BREAKS LIKE THAT. I AM NOT COMFORTABLE TAKING ALL PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES AND PUTTING THE PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES ASIDE. I ONLY HAVE THE UC SYSTEM, UMICH, AND MY HOMESTATE. THAT IS ENOUGH FROM THE PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES.

4.) I CAN APPLY TO ANY SCHOOL. I WILL NOT TAKE NOR HAVE PATIENCE NOR TOLERATE UNIVERSITIES THAT HAVE EASY COLLEGE TRANSFER ADMISSIONS! I HAVE A ZERO-TOLERANCE FOR THAT.

5.) I KNOW THE QUALITIES/ASPECTS THAT I WANT IN A SCHOOL ALONG WITH THE LOCATION, ETC. IT IS THERE AT THOSE SCHOOLS.

WITH THAT BEING SAID, THERE WILL NO MORE NEW POST ON THIS FORUM. PLEASE STOP POSTING COMMENTS ON HERE IN ORDER TO HURT MY FEELINGS, MAKE ME LOOK BAD, DISCOURAGING ME FROM APPLYING TO THOSE UNIVERSITIES, OR THINKING THAT I CANNOT GET ACCEPTED ANYWORK/CANNOT HANDLE THE COURSEWORK/CANNOT MARTRICULATE AT THOSE UNIVERSITIES, AS WELL AS USING HANDWRITING STYLES, AND OTHER PIECES OF INFORMATION TO MAKE ASSUMPTIONS THAT I CANNOT ATTEND THESE SCHOOLS and other things, etc.

PLEASE STOP TRYING TO BASH ME. NO MORE COMMENTING ON THIS THREAD.

Crazygirl9999, please calm down and stop being rude to the people who are merely trying to help you.
