Hello,
I have a bit of questions regarding transferring, I am currently in my second year at a community college and literally have no clue regarding transferring. If someone is willing to inbox me and answer my questions it will be deeply appreciated.
Your community college probably has a Transfer Advisor. Find out who that person is, and go meet with them. They are the experts at helping students at your CC find good places to continue their studies at.
Talk to your CC guidance counselor. They should have plenty of info for you
Visit your college advising center first. They will give you nearly all the information you need. Make an appointment if they don’t have walk ins.
ETA: @confusedgirl101 , I suggest you do a little research before asking people here questions which are easily answered with few phone calls, emails to your college advisor, or internet searches.
thanks for your comment it was very helpful
Thank you, but some of my questions are kind of stupid, like when and how do I transfer, etc. I am a first generation college student, so I don’t really have any family that can help me out.
Do you have a particular major? Then there should be an advisor in your department to help you with this if there isn’t a Transfer Advisor for the whole CC. Your questions aren’t stupid! They are normal questions for CC students to ask.
The first thing to think about is how much your family can pay for the college you transfer to. That will determine what your options end up being. Don’t forget to ask about financial aid and scholarships for transfer students at each of the places you decide to apply to.
If you have a specific major, does your CC have any articulation agreements (guaranteed transfer arrangements) for that major? Can you go visit those programs and see what you think of them?
Usually CC students apply for transfer during their last semester before completing their AA/AS degrees. A lot of transfer applications are due in March for admission for the next fall, but you have to check the websites of each place you apply to to find out when things are due. All of the information should be right there. If you can’t find it, call or email the Transfer Admission Office at that place and ask.
Your transfer center likely has handouts you can read and also holds regular information sessions. In addition they have counselors that are there to help you with the entire process.
Here’s my recommendation: make an appt with a counselor, say you know nothing about the process, ask them how you can learn more. They should be able to direct you to the resources they have that will help as well as answer specific questions you have
edit: @confusedgirl101 I saw you had a post a year ago that says you are a CA CC student. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/pre-med-topics/2079556-ucla-medical-school.html So things get even better. CA CC have agreements with the UC and CSU schools on what classes count for transfer. There is something called IGETC that lets you satisfy the breadth requirements at all campuses. If your grades are good enough (typically a 3.2) then you can get guaranteed admission at a UC campus taking part in the TAG program. UCLA is not part of the TAG program but they have a TAP program that gives a boost in admission chances. Your xfer center will have info on all of this; given that post is from a year ago it is unfortunate you waited so long to investigate how to xfer since there is a lot of help and advice you could have gotten.
