My D is going to a summer program at Colby. What is the best suggestion for transport from PWM to the College? The shuttle bus doesn't run in the summers. The limo services as listed on the website are pretty expensive. Ideas?

Check with Greyhound. I believe that is your best bet.

Also try calling the college to see if there are any Maine or coastal Massachusetts or New Hampshire kids doing the program who can give your kid a lift.

Try Concord Trailways and Mermaid Travel. Google it.

Concord Trailways is now called Concord Coachlines (just for everyone’s benefit) and it is what I would use too. If I recall, it doesn’t go directly to/from the airport, so you may have to take a taxi on that end. Additionally, I don’t believe the bus goes all the way to Colby in the summer. It will go to Augusta, which is 20 min away. You may need to take another taxi.

Overall, I would contact the program (before admissions, because they are often busy) to find out what others in your situation do, and then pursue the Concord Coach option, among the others options suggested before my own.

Thanks. I already talked to Concord and they don’t go to Colby in the summer. I also have talked to Mermaid and they want $135 one way. I can get a limo for $140 one way. I talked to the school to see if there are any other parents who would share a ride with me for this program and she said she will get back with me. I just was trying to see if there was something “magic” I had not investigated yet.

It’s hard getting transportation up here! It costs me at least $40 plus tip to get from my house to the airport, which is about 30 minutes away.

Transportation is easier during the school year (just so prospective students or their parents won’t think getting to/from Colby is impossible). Concord Coachlines has a daily bus from Alfond athletic center to Portland during fall and spring semester (and to Boston’s Logan Airport too) but requires a short cab ride from the Portland bus station to PWM), Mermaid is half the price cited above before/after school holidays and Greyhound leaves from Waterville as well. There’s also a ride board on the Student Government Association page of the college website and many students get rides from friends since a fair number of students bring cars to Colby.
