I was just wondering if a parent's DUI/long addiction to alcohol and how it shaped a student's aspirations and research interests would be a good essay topic for UC's and the common app.

I would love to read it when you are done!

The topic itself sounds good, but I’m pretty sheltered. (privileged New Yorker hollah!)
Are you interested in studying sociology and did psychology research or something?

Good luck to you and hope you get to spend 4 years in CA ^^;;

I can read it as well!

Thanks for the replies, and ya Weavegirl123 that’s the only problem. I’ve been doing research in biomechanics for the past year (like understanding structural properties of the bone), but nothing related to physiology or addiction. Does anyone know how I can’t tie it all together? I was thinking of just saying that I joined that research project hoping that it would be a stepping stone to allowing me access to more addiction-related projects, but ended becoming captivated by what I experienced and that is how my passion for science became ignited.

What you said sounds fine to me, but also keep in mind that you don’t have to have everything tied together. Maybe there are better uses for those words! This essay topic will be fine as long as the essay turns out to be about you, revealing of you, and not about the parent. It does not have to tie specifically to other parts of your application.

So I finished a rough draft of it (I was required to write a personal statement for English class). I only spent one day on it, but I would just like to know if I’m going in the right direction/if anyone has any suggestions or anything. @Weavegirl123 and @estara89 are you guys still willing to read it? I appreciate anyone who is reading to read!

Yes, I am.

Im thinking more of your overcoming the difficulties of escaping your past for a brighter future through education.
