How many days before the start of the college orientation (i20 start date) do students typically travel to US?

What is the accommodation procedure normally during those days prior to the first day?

Typically? I have no idea, but you’d imagine they reach there in time for the orientation. I’ll be reaching there on the day of my orientation, but you could schedule your trip for a day or two before.

Most colleges accommodate incoming students in their summer housing and then help them move into fall housing. At least, that’s what Berkeley’s doing.

To be honest, this is one of the best examples of types of questions that your university can best answer.

Also, Im sorry I forgot, but where are you headed to abscalc?

Travel to US would depend on whether you are going on your own or with family.

Also it would depend on your budget. So if one is on a tight budget then it makes sense to arrive on the move-in day.

All Colleges have a move-in date for freshman.

If the family is going along makes sense to go 3-4 days prior and start shopping for your dorm requirements like linen, storage, mobile, open a bank account, get a debit or credit card, acquaint one with the surroundings, check out the grocery store, pharmacy, book store and
places to eat in the neighbourhood.

My experience, If one is arriving before the move in day, one is supposed to make their own arrangements.

Also makes sense combining a holiday with the trip since we go all the way from India.

In consideration of anialways post and adding to my previous one, I’m going with my family and we’ll reach our college town on the day of the orientation out of choice. Also, anialways, what would you suggest if we reach there on move in day? Obviously, a mobile phone pick up can be arranged. But I’d reckon it would make sense to buy the linens and accompanying items beforehand. I hope setting up a checking account doesn’t take long :o

Not all the way from India, but that’s what we’re doing :p

Ok Tizil

You are different, in a nice way… from the rest of us going all the way from India.

The idea is that figuring out the place and things is time taking not the actual job that needs to be done.

Foe example if one needs a phone one would need to figure out which service provider, what Plan and the nearest store.

Ditto for bank, figure out which bank, location of the bank, walking up to that place and then the paperwork formalities.

The linen, if possible, visit your room, check out the space and your requirements accordingly. Apart from standard linen and towels and blankets, pillows, maybe a mat for bath as well as bedside… in case of NYC, since it gets really cold I had to pick up one for the walk in Closet as well. Our list had a microwave, printer, underbed storage, shoe rack,
hangers, some basic utensils (cutlery, tumbler, plastic storage bins, paper plates, tissues, wipes) to eat in the room and so you too will have your own list.

What I am saying is all this takes time and more so because you are a in a new place and need to figure out stuff.

The book store will require 2-3 visits and the computer store will require a separate visit.

For all of you please have your passport, copy of I-20, and College ID handy at all times. These will be required for phone and account opening. Also explore and get your bearings whether it is the bus route or the subway or hailing a cab. Will have your parents leaving with much more comfort and confidence in your abilities and moms with less worries.

This might help you understand what I am trying to say…some of the things you will need…as it does not make sense for us to carry all this from home… the stuff that we need from the list…this is what i meant when i said going 3-4 days prior to move-in date.

Well, you can’t enter the US more than 30 days before your course starts.

I’ll be reaching SF long before move-in day and stuff.

I think buying here is much easier (bed sizes are different in the US). Great places to do back to school shopping include Target, Walmart. I think there is a Target next to Berkeley. Best bet is to connect with Indian/international students who are in their second year. Berkeley bound folks, feel free to PM me.
