How long does it take to travel to Amherst, Umass, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire, by the PVTA bus, by biking, and by walking?

My daughter says by PVTA it’s about 50 minutes to Amherst and about 25 minutes to UMass.

Walking is not a viable option and I wouldn’t want to bike to MHC or Hampshire.

Actually, most of the year I wouldn’t want to bike to Amherst or ZooMass either.

Yes, Walking is not very viable. Wildworld’s estimates are correct, give or take a little for traffic. There’s also an express bus from Smith to UMass at certain times of the day, which cuts down a bit on travel, but it’s still about 20/25 minutes.

Amherst is actually 20-30 min away by car, but the bus takes the long way around, going first to the mall, then to UMASS, then to Amherst center, and getting to Amherst College last of all, hence why it takes so long.

A fair warning: the B43 route (Smith to Amherst College) frequently runs late.

Thank you everyone. How long does it take to get to Mount Holyoke and Hampshire from Smith by the PVTA bus?

If you visit the PVTA website, you’ll be able to look at schedules and compare travelling time. Also, keep in mind that first years are not allowed to take five college classes during their first semester (at least, that was the rule when I was there).

Personally, I love the bike from Smith to UMass or Amherst (assuming the weather is reasonable). It’s an easy 8 miles on mostly a well maintained bike path. Hampshire is a bit more of a push, and there is a nasty hill at the end. MoHo would be a bit far to bike in a reasonable amount of time, and it is a much more hilly route.

moho to smith is ~40 minutes by bus, unless you take the express which is considerably faster. feels weird typing that out, though, because it never feels like 40 minutes. very easy, scenic ride.

Just a note on S&P’s post. You can take 5 college classes your first semester but you need class dean’s approval. Also, I wouldn’t advise it right away. It’s hard enough figuring out how to fit in a smith schedule without including travel time. The only one I would attempt right away is Hampshire which is so close. Moho is just too far
