Trimester??

I've been admitted to the University of Michigan and am very close to sending in my deposit. I'm examining the school from every possible angle and I found out that UMich runs on the trimester system. I was wondering if someone could break this down for me? Will my breaks correlate with those of students attending colleges using the semester system? When does each trimester start and end? Overall, does it significantly influence academic performance? Do students generally dislike the trimester calender?

Thanks for all your help.

good question...i needed info on this too...also, how does this trimester account for the tuition cost??

Michigan really follows the standard semester system (fall term from september to december, winter term from december to april). It's just classified as a trimester system because we have a spring/summer term (May-July). Only a small proportion of students take classes then, it's basically just summer school for students who want/need to get ahead with basic requirements (there's a relatively limited number of courses offered, compared to fall/winter).

Here's the schedule for Fall 2008.

About the only difference is that our Christmas break is a bit shorter. Winter term starts around Jan 3 and ends around last week of April.

No, your Christmas and spring breaks won’t correlate with a lot of the breaks of other universities. it sucks

You’ll have a much shorter winter break but you’ll be out of school a lot earlier
