Looking at these two schools as possible fits for DS, a junior. We live very far away from them so looking for some real, honest information about either; their forums aren't very active. DS has great stats so far, may be interested in business/communications/econ/philosophy, but is very undecided. Claremont Mckenna is his number one right now, and he seems like a perfect fit for that school, to give you an idea of him.

Trinity U and U of Richmond seem wonderful in many ways, and have most things he would be looking for, including financial aid. Some concerns are the many references to the student bodies being white, preppy, rich, and problems that minorities might have, especially at U of Richmond. DS is not white, preppy, or rich, and would prefer a more diverse campus, but is willing to look at schools that may have everything else that he would like.

If you have any insight into anything about these schools, I would love to hear from you, as we may not be able to visit before application time next year. Thanks.

I know a lot about both Claremont McKenna and Trinity (I applied to both of those schools), but not as much about Richmond. I only know the general info about Richmond (preppy rich white kids interested business, things like that).

Trinity has a beautiful campus (with beautiful students lol). I was very impressed with every class I sat in. The students seem to be hard working and ambitious (though I would not label them as intellectuals). While the majoirity of the student body is white, I wouldn’t describe them as overtly preppy, and I noticed that there were more minorities there at CMC, or most schools I visited. There are a lot of international students (especially from South America). Trinity also seems generous with money. I did not qualify for any aid (but that’s a rare problem that most people won’t come across); however I was given a $20,000 scholarship, so they will make sure you can afford to go to school there.

I’d just like to add that Trinity made #27 for best value on the university list. It beat out schools such as USC, Tulane, George Washington, and Lehigh for that spot.

destinyhelp-
Thanks so much for the information. Trinity U. looks like an amazing school that doesn’t seem to get much love. I first heard of it as an honorable mention in the book “The Hidden Ivies”, and have liked everything I have read about it, including the location. I hope we get a chance to visit.

wrldtravlr,
I can speak a lot about TU, a little about CMC. My D was accepted at both.

CMC, in her opinion is a utilitarian campus, not ugly, though. I think her weekend there was not so great because all her luggage was lost. She also felt the school to be a little too pre-professional for her.

From the moment she stepped foot on the TU campus, she felt it was for her. She also wanted to graduate w/o debt, and the generous scholarship from TU, coupled with the much lower COA, allowed for that.

She is a minority, and felt the kids at TU were all very friendly and accepting of all kinds.
She also really liked the fact that for Study Abroad TU works individually with each student to place them in programs best for them.

Tu was a safety for her, but she was challenged.

Good Luck to your son, and feel free to PMme if I can be of more help.

TU is a “best kept secret” nationally. A great Liberal arts education, and they’re very financially healthy which allows them to be more generous with cash than other.

Lived in San Antonio and visited TU on many occasions, have friends who went there or whose parents were faculty. I would have no problems recommending TU for a quality liberal arts education. I think the Greeks aren’t allowed to rush until the spring to make sure students settle in. They have a very large endowment and it shows in there facilities and lecture they sponsor. If you want a better feel for the schools, try getting their student newspapers online.

Thanks so much for the responses; you have confirmed some of my conclusions about Trinity U after researching, and we will definitely try to visit.

Do most graduates stay in the area after graduation? How about internships and career assistance?

Anyone out there have any info on U. of Richmond?

I visited U of R for a science fair last great (and I also live in the Richmond area), so while I can’t say much about the student population, the campus is beautiful, easy on pedestrians, and scenic - somehow they hid a lake in there. The buildings are nice as well. It’s also very close to the city and major shopping areas while still maintaining that forested, secluded feel.
I know one Indian girl (I forget her major, but she’s definitely not business-minded) who goes there now, and she seems pretty happy. I think it’s a fact of life that generalizations are never the whole story.
