Friends are going on a college search trip to Boston. Looking for schools 4,000 students and larger. Their son, a junior wants to major in the sciences. Tufts, Boston College and Boston University is on their list and they would like suggestions of similar schools within an hour or so of Boston. Any suggestions of like universities or colleges would be appreciated. Any ideas?

I am doing the same thing - BC, Tufts, and Harvard.
I was thinking BU, but I think we might just drive through it.
You might want to check out Northeastern.

Its a tad smaller than 4,000, but Brandeis is right in the area.

everything's within an hour or so of Boston. You should definitely check out Northeastern and Brandeis, especially Brandeis, even though it is a tad smaller.

Other colleges: Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is also a possibility, although it only has around 3000 students. There's also a Suffolk U in Boston, although I know nothing about it; no one from our school has ever attended there. Wesleyan in CT does have most of the scientific departments. There's also always the Ivies and MIT.

For business majors, you should also check out Bentley. Extremely high-tech facilities, even though the school is not as well known nationally.

Also, Babson is well known for their entrepreneurial studies.

Neither of these are science schools, but the thread is entitled "Trip to Boston" so I figured this qualifies for inclusion.

In Worcester, there's also Holy Cross and Clark University, both excellent schools. Worcester is about an hour west of Boston.

A little further from Boston than you would like, and not a prestigious private school, but known for both pharmacy majors, and marine bio is the University of Rhode Island in Kingston.

BC, BU(doesn't have a "normal" campus boston is the campus), Harvard, MIT if your a genius, ugly campus though in my opinion, Northeastern, and like people said before Holy Cross is a little smaller and in Worcester but its wicked pretty and has a great rep

Northeastern & Brandeis def.

Brown in Providence , you can take a train right into the city.

University of New Hampshire might be worth a visit

I work in the area and know the schools. MIT is the obvious best choice. Tufts is also good. BC is a bit overrated. If you are looking at BU, then you should also look at UMass Amherst, which has several nationally ranked science programs. It is farther from Boston, but there is a bus from campus to Boston. WPI is good, but mostly for engineering, and Worcester is not the best college town. I would not recommend URI or UNH for science.

Providence College (may as well visit if you are already going to Brown)
