Triple Major?

Hey, I'm starting my sophomore year here at umich and I'm taking spring and summer classes. I have been really thinking about triple majoring but honestly don't know if it would just be overkill and a waste of time/money.

My majors would be a BA in Art and Design, Sociology, and Romance Languages. When I get old I want to do furniture design, but out of college I would like to work internationally in advertising or some other arts / something combination. I don't plan on going to grad school any time soon (can't afford it, want to get on with living my life!)

This would involve some 134 credits total (33 for sociology, 59 for art and design, and 42 credits from romance langs. These are just preliminary credit totals I've found online. I'm obviously not opposed to spring and summer terms or going another semester or two.

Do you know anyone who has done it at umich? In particular in something social science / arts related like myself? I am already dual enrolled in LSA and AD and have been advised about a romance lang (fulfill french, 12 credits in spanish) degree and BA combination.

Would adding sociology really be too much? both in terms of workload and not getting my money's worth type thing~ Thanks!

I don’t think it is necessary to have a triple major. Is isn’t worth the extra money if you could otherwise graduate on time. I would skip the sociology major and take the soc classes that fit in your schedule. In future life refer to as an additional “emphasis”.

Is your 134 credit total just for pre-reqs? I would imagine Romance Languages/Sociology would have a lot of overlaps, but regardless, in order to triple major, you would have to graduate with at least 180 credits.

I’ve never heard of anyone triple majoring, and I do think it is overkill. I have, however, heard of double majors + a minor, which is definitely doable and much easier in terms of time/money. As res ipsa pointed out though, it really is not necessary to have 3 majors, and realistically, you could just list on your resume “Substantial coursework in Sociology with an emphasis in [x]” or whatever you want.

You just made this number up.

I met someone doing a triple in Stats, Math, and Econ. I knew someone who was considering a triple in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Math but decided not to do the Math (I think he’s minoring but I’m not sure).

If you’re seriously considering it you should do more planning.

Actually, no, I didn’t. I just assumed that because you need 150 credits to double major, it would logically make sense that you need 180 credits to triple major.

don’t triple major. it is the epitome of diminishing returns. leave some flexibility in your schedule to take classes that might sound fun and interesting.

thealbatross, I double majored and took fewer than 130 credits to do so. Within LSA, one can easily double major with 120-130 credits. I am not sure about triple major.

Ahhh I stand corrected. Perhaps it is different for me because my majors are within different schools (Ross and LSA) so the requirements are a bit different.
