Is it true that the dimensions for a triple in south quad are no bigger than the doubles? How is this right?

My son's triple in South Quad is 11X17. At orientation I asked if a triple was really a double with three occupants, and the response was "we don't do that any more, a triple is really a bigger room made for three people." After seeing the dimensions, I really don't believe that statement.

My daughter's double in South Quad is shown as 12x19, that doesn't seem right. How can a triple be smaller than a double? Is it an economy triple? I have seen that those are smaller, but you pay less.

you can go to www.housing.umich.edu to room dimensions and virtual tours for rooms in every res hall.

lol my double is 12 x 19

fredmar, they say that it is not an economy triple, and it isn't being charged as an economy triple. I guess we'll see at move-in.

My daughter has been assigned a triple in South Quad as well and the information that she received recently says that the dimensions are 11 x 17. How can that be and how can they get away with that - its obviously a double room and its not even being charged at an economy triple rate. My daughter didn't request a triple - shouldn't people make an objection to this if they deny making doubles into triples and they are doing this and then do it anyway ???

Yes, GoBlue and SBDad, I think that you have a legitimate grip on move in day if those dimensions are correct. That said, however, I do know of several honors kids who didn't even get honors housing of any kind, so maybe they figure they can get away with it due to the high demand. I wonder if our kids are going to know each other... it is funny to see all this cyberplanning segueing into the real world.

fredmar, son is very happy to be in South Quad so he doesn't really care about the size of the room. We always knew that housing was a real weakness at UM, so no real surprise.

no need to worry

My son called housing a few days ago and they were very helpful. They explained that each dorm submits a room size to them that they put on the housing assignment letter. This, however, is only one room. My son is in a west quad triple suite and one room is '10x17' and the other(bedroom area) is '10x11'. He is not paying for an economy triple.

When I went into the Housing building in the Student Activities Center... last week?, I saw this lady complain to one of the people about her son getting put into Baites or Bursley. A contract was then written up and he was put into East Quad. While I'm guessing if you wanted to stay in SQ, you couldn't exactly complain, but if the room is too small, you might be able to ask them about it.

Consider going with lofts to free up floor space. With Michigan's notoriously undersized rooms, it's a popular option. You'll be seeing plenty of them when you get to campus. http://www.collegebedlofts.com/

Some res halls have 'building block' furniture and no longer allow lofts.
You might check with your dorm/contract before buying one.

I sent an email to the Housing Office and got a response back that they had gone over to measure the room that my daughter was assigned to. The dimensions turned out to be 12 x 17. Besides the one foot, the only difference between the "Economy Triple" and her room is a third closet - Whoopee !! Somehow I think that putting three 18 year old girls in such a small room that only had two closets would border on criminal. Three separate closets will help but it certainly isn't a reasonable amount of space for three. If she wasn't determined to stay in South Quad I would insist that she try to do a room swap to another building - but then again, she would have to find a female in Honors willing to move into a triple in order to do that - don't know if that is likely anyway.

A good friend of mine had one of these triples and didn't really seem to mind it. Granted they weren't really big on furniture, so no couches and not even a tv in the room. But the way they set up the room there was an open area where you could probably put a small couch.

It really isn't a big deal. If two girls can share an 11x12 room in Markley (66 sqft/person), three girls can share a 12x17 room in South Quad (68 sqft/person)

My triple is 12 by 24 approximately. Of course I have yet to see it because I'm a freshamn.

what dorm are you in ? Sounds too big to be South Quad. Evidently each building has different size rooms even though room charges are the same and only based on the number of people - other than being designated as "economy", which costs a little bit less.

im in couzens hall

We took my daughter to U of M this weekend. I almost passed out when I saw the room in South Quad that will hold three girls and all of their stuff. To make matters worse, one of the long walls has all three closets and the other long wall has two windows so there is very limited contiguous space. Fortunately an RA offered some suggestions as he had been in the same size room as a triple last year. One loft plus bunk beds with the rest of the furniture strategically placed around the room makes it bearable. The connections for the TV and internet are not very conveniently placed (both are right at the doorway when you walk into the room) so everyone should bring very long ethernet cables and duct tape to tape down the cables so no one trips.

oh my that does sound small. Did your daughter sign up for a triple economy? It does sound like there is alot of variability between dorms. I guess the kids get creative with their spaces.
