Truman State University vs Randolph-Macon College vs Wittenberg University

It is really a tough decision for me. Because of my current financial predicament, I have to go to a institute offers me the most financial aids. My intended major is economics or computer science.

Could you tell me which one sounds better? Thanks.

Each of these has a lot to offer. Truman State is the Missouri public honors college, and if you are a Missouri resident probably is your best financial deal. What are your long term goals? Grad school? Work? What kind of placement are you going to get from these places? If you are a Missouri resident, and expect to remain in the midwest for work, Truman State may be your better choice because of access to the regional job market. If you want to get out of the midwest and the financials really truly are equivalent (do not forget to calculate in expected increases in costs over the next four years, transportation from where you live to and from the college, and whether your aid is primarily grants or loans), then think about which of you other options are most interesting to you.

Wishing you all the best as you make this tough decision.

I can't really do a comparison because of lack of familiarity with two of the schools, but I can assure you that there are a lot of very good students at Truman State University. A number of my son's friends who are really excellent students chose to go there last year over many other options. My H and I keep running into people who have gone on to good professional schools after graduating from Truman, and they give the school rave reviews.

To me, it seems to be in the middle of nowhere, but I have been impressed enough by the recommendations from current and past students that we are giving it a close look for our daughter (just a 10th grader now).

One bonus point for Truman, in my opinion: you can easily take the train into Chicago (4 hr trip). It comes through La Plata, just down the road from Kirksville, daily. Whenever I have been on that train, it has had a bunch of Truman State students on it, most of them Chicago natives.

As for majors: Computer science may be limited at a place like Truman State. Have you looked at the course selection or checked out what kind of research is going on there? I would suggest that you consider a double major in both economics and computer science. Some of the required math will do double duty, and you will make more connections among the faculty that way. Also, it should increase your chances of lining up an internship if you have courses in both of those fields on your record.

How about study abroad? Truman State makes a big deal about its study abroad option on its web pages. It seems to have a large and active office devoted to it. (It is one of the attractive things in my daughter's eyes.)

Good luck with your decision.

Thank you for your advice!:)
I am not a a Missouri resident but an international student.

Which one gives you the best financial aid package?
In terms of ranking and stuff, I would pick Wittenberg University over the two others.
good luck

Truman State University offers the best financial aid package........
Wittenberg University's is also OK..........

bump~~..............

bump...................................................

"Truman State University offers the best financial aid package........"

By how much?

What can you do with the money you would save by going to Truman State?

Where are you from? Will you need winter clothing? All of these are in snow territory. If Truman's financial package is better, the money you save there can be used for snow gear. You can check out the weather history for these places at National and Local Weather Forecast, Radar, Map and Report

What about transportation costs from your home country to the university?

Why did you pick these three places to apply to in the first place? What did you like about them then?

I like Truman State, but that is because I grew up about an hour north of there in Iowa, and I know people who went there to college. I've driven past the campus many times, and I like the way it looks. I don't know anything about the other places.

All the best.

I am curious about how an international student is going to get to and from Truman State. Are you planning to fly into Chicago and then take the train to and from Kirksville (La Plata)? Is Kirksville on a bus line? Perhaps Truman State runs a shuttle into the airports in St. Louis or Kansas City--I don't know if that is the case or not. I don't want to discourage you from attending Truman State, but you might want to include transportation logistics in your deliberations.

Not that this helps or is very relevant, but Randolph-Macon has a very nice campus with a nice feel to it.

happymomof1, thank you for your kind help...I chose Truman State University for its easy access to professors and Kirksville's quietness...but now I heard a lot of complains about its housing and education quality>''<

I'm curious what you have heard--and from whom--about Truman States' educational quality that is giving you second thoughts. If it was my comment about computer science as a major, please don't take that as an automatic negative; I was just suggesting that you look into course availability, etc.

In general, I hear quite good things about its educational quality, but I don't know anyone who studied computer science there.

Thank you for your advice...I heard that from "studnets review" (a website) >''<

^^^I took a quick look. Grand total 9 comments; 6 positive, 3 negative. What I got out of a quick perusal is that the three unhappy students thought the workload was too hard. Perhaps they expected an easier school.

Good luck making your decision. It must be hard to decide on a school from a great distance. It would be good if you could visit, but of course that is difficult for an international. Is there any way you can make contact with current students at these schools and ask them specific questions?

^________^
Facebook, I'll try

It looks like the closest airport would be Quincy, Illinois, and all those flights seem to change planes in St. Louis. The airport code for Quincy is UIN

Rail information for Amtrak is at [url=<a href="http://www.amtrak.com%5DAmtrak%5B/url">http://www.amtrak.com]Amtrak[/url</a>]
The Chicago code is CHI and La Plata code is LAP. Rail fare is about $65 one way. I'm not too sure how to get from the airport in Chicago (probably O'Hare = ORD) to Union Station, but there surely is a city bus that will do that.

I would ask the international student office at Truman State for specific travel advice though. They would have better information.

Whether you end up at Truman State or not, thanks for reminding me about it! I'm going to have to take happychild on a drive-by to look at it the next time we are in Iowa with the cousins.

Any more advice? The deadline is coming........

Dear C12112

A fellow possible Truman State student started a thread on 4-23 titled "Truman State vs. Reed". The thread is here in "College Search & Selection". piezor seems to be in a quandary similar to yours. Perhaps you could PM him/her and discuss things?

All the best.

Hey C12112,

I'm currently also considering Truman University as one of my choices, and from my one visit to Truman it seems like a pretty good school in terms of general academics. I'm not very familiar with the other two places that you listed, however, I do know that overall Truman is quite generous about financial aid, etc. However, keep in mind that Truman is located in a relatively small town with virtually nothing to do, but I have heard that you can take a four hour train to Chicago if you ever want to visit the big cities.

I'm afraid I don't know much about econ or computer science at Truman. Have you gotten an electronic courselist? They have been sending them out in the form of cds recently and it might be helpful to request one.
