Hi, so i will probably be going to Swarthmore next year. I wanted to ask if it would be appropriate to wear at MAGA hat if trump wins the 2020 election. I wouldn’t wear it on a regular basis, but just to celebrate the victory the day after the election. I know the college is overwhelmingly liberal and people will give me stares and potentially get aggressive, but i want to celebrate my president/country! If Hillary won the 2016 election i have no doubt that there would be students wearing Hillary gear. And I’m sure people wear political stuff on random days. Is there any rule you know of against wearing political stuff?!
Thanks so much!
As far as I know there is no rule about wearing political statements.
When the great Dr. J’s Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Boston Celtics 4 games to 3 in the 1982 NBA Eastern Conference finals in Boston Garden, the Boston fans united in chanting “Beat LA”, wishing the rival 76ers well in the finals
So when the Boston Red Sox won the World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers took out a full page ad in the Boston Globe thanking the Red Sox for a great series.
When G.H. Bush left office he left a classy letter for incoming President Clinton who defeated him in a close election. Look it up. It makes fine reading.
These are great examples of class.
What you are proposing shows real lack of class.
No, I don’t think it’s appropriate.
Have you been admitted to Swarthmore?
If you have, and you do end up enrolling there, wait until the 2020 election is actually underway to worry about what is and isn’t appropriate to wear on campus. You will have a good sense by then of what is and isn’t acceptable in that community.
If your question really is “Can I be happy at Swarthmore as a Trump supporter?”, then that is something to take directly to the students who are already on campus. Check the lists of student organizations on campus, contact those that indicate more conservative interests, and ask.
“Is there any rule you know of against wearing political stuff?!”
Really? The question suggests that the OP doesn’t have much of a notion of what college life is like in this country.
It definitely leaves me wondering if this is a genuinely delusional senior (has apparently never visited a college campus anywhere, and is counting on getting into a school with an acceptance rate under 15% in the ED 2 round), or if it’s somebody younger just fishing for outrage for fun.
Closing in 3…2…1
I think the more interesting question is “Can I get involved on campus as a conservative?” The answer seems to be YES!
There is a Swarthmore Conservative Society group with an active Facebook page which has hosted guest speakers this school year.
I’m sure that if you go to school in Pennsylvania, there will also be opportunities to go door-to-door for candidates, as Pennsylvania is a key battleground state.
So IF you go to Swarthmore, and IF Trump is the nominee, and IF you volunteer on his campaign, and IF he wins, then yes, of course you can wear a Trump hat.
I’m personally not a fan of our 45th president, but I would still defend your right to free speech.
“When the great Dr. J’s Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Boston Celtics 4 games to 3 in the 1982 NBA Eastern Conference finals in Boston Garden, the Boston fans united in chanting “Beat LA”, wishing the rival 76ers well in the finals”
In fairness, I think those Celtic fans were more expressing their hatred of the Lakers than wishing the Sixers well.
Exactly, I rooted for the Red Sox to win the World Series last October, since as a SF Giants fan, the only thing worse than rooting for the Red Sox is rooting for the Dodgers. :-&
So if someone wore a Hillary 2020 shirt if she won would that also show a lack of class even if they supported her campaign and canvassed for her
So fake.
Why is this a thread?
We needed a good hat thread.
Coming from a conservative, I feel the same way; however it seems as though you may be picking a fight. In your best interest, I recommend being the bigger person and taking the high road as it may lead to alienation. What exactly do you benefit from in this situation? On a day-to-day basis, you can celebrate all you want knowing that you support him in office. So why the need to aggravate those around you by parading around your Trump hat? Looking at this from a different viewpoint, if liberals were to do such a thing I can understand how frustrating this would be. They are able to demonstrate their beliefs so why can’t the rest of us? It all comes back to being the bigger person. Knowing when to take the high road. Again this may be frustrating, but sadly that is just the reality of the world we live in.
With the bill forward, yes. With the bill backward, no – to me, that lacks class.
First of all, unless you applied ED to Swat, you are more likely than not NOT going to “be going to Swarthmore next year” as they have an 11% acceptance rate. Likewise for Haverford (I’m guessing by your username that Haverford is in the mix too.)
Beyond that, your comment stating that you “know the college is overwhelmingly liberal and people will give me stares and potentially get aggressive, but i want to celebrate my president/country” is laughable at best.
Nobody is going to get aggressive with you because of your hat or any other article of clothing you might wear, but you might get some eyes rolling and/or occasional looks of displeasure or disgust and you might not have people lining up wanting to become your best friend, but nobody’s going to stop you from wearing anything you darn well please.
Wearing your campaign gear before the election is appropriate to support your candidate. Wearing it after to rub it in is classless. I don’t care who the candidate is. When an election is over, it’s time to heal and reconcile.
^^^And yet I still see bumper stickers for Obama '08.

And we’re done. Closing since it has devolved into debate.
